Overview

Sandra Boynton -- author of such bestselling books as Moo, Baa, La La La! and The Going to Bed Book -- and Michael Ford present this "too-illogical zoological musical revue," which showcases 17 original tracks inspired by Broadway. With a star-studded CD featuring songs like "Nobody Understands Me," performed by Meryl Streep, and the foot-stomping "Philadelphia Chickens," sung by the Bacon Brothers, this fauna-filled fiesta is pure genius and will have kids clucking along with the music in no time.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Sandra Boynton and Michael Ford's second album, Philadelphia Chickens, is the soundtrack to an "imaginary musical revue" that features the vocal talents of Meryl Streep, Laura Linney, Natasha Richardson, and Boynton's children, among others. Like Boynton and Ford's debut album, Rhinoceros Tap, Philadelphia Chickens' musical touchstone is the sound of classic show tunes, and the duo and its (mostly) all-star cast make the most of it, beginning with the A Chorus Line-like intro, "Cows," sung by the Seldom Herd. Streep's witty "Nobody Understands Me" emphasizes that this album is more grown-up-sounding than Rhinoceros Tap, even though it's still well within the realm of children's music. Songs like Keith Boynton's "Be Like a Duck," Patti LuPone's "I Like to Fuss," Michael Ford's "Those Dinosaur Blues," and Eric Stoltz's appropriately cuddly "Snuggle Puppy" -- which Boynton later turned into a children's book -- keep the album young at heart. Scott Bakula's "Pig Island," Kevin Kline's "Busy Busy Busy," and Adam Bryant's "Pajama Time" are other standout tracks from this Grammy-nominated album, which truly has appeal for all ages.

I'm not a fan of kiddie tunes in any genre of music. "Philadelphia Chickens," however, is a far cry from the usual kiddie fare. First, it introduces kids to styles not very often adapted for preschoolers, like jazz and honky tonk to calypso and more. Then it provides very original and very funny lyrics to Sandra Boynton's well-known cartoon cast. Finally, Boynton herself does a fantastic job of matching musical groups and artists to songs, not on the basis of celebrity (though you'll recognize some names) but "fit." The result? A CD/book compilation that I enjoy every bit as much as my pre-k son and his friends do.

This cd has entertained my daughter on many long car trips. The songs are cheerful and appropriate for young audiences, and some are performed by stars parents will know.

This is a whimsical CD fit for children of all ages. Sandra Boynton's children's books and CDs are just plain FUN! My two year old grandaughter is especially fond of Snuggle Puppy. I have been known to listen to this CD when I'm home alone.
