Overview

Misram (emeritus, comparative religion, Banaras Hindu U.) divides Hinduism—in which religion and philosophy were never kept far apart—into separate parts on the Veda, the Bhagavadgita, and the Upanishads, this last garnering two sections, one on language and logic, the other on religious and philosophical thought. One of the author's aims is to counter a kind of Western scholarship, especially, he says, that of theologians who have characterized Hinduism as life-negating, unethical, other-worldly, and mystical. Misram calls these claims "baseless." One feature of this volume is frequent comparison of Hinduism to other religions, especially Christianity. The book is distributed in the US by South Asia Books.
