Description: This is the fifth edition of a comprehensive phlebotomy textbook. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The purpose is to update this textbook of phlebotomy.
Audience: This would be indispensable for phlebotomy instructors and students, but it also would be of interest to others performing phlebotomy as part of their daily activities (i.e., nurses and other allied health practitioners). Both authors are well known for their phlebotomy and education expertise.
Features: Once again, these two authors have produced a superb book. The writing is crisp, concise and clear. New to this edition is its full size (8.5" x 11"), updated information, increased illustrations and photos, and liberal use of color. The latter is absolutely superb — the chapters open with brilliantly colored first pages recapitulating the rainbow of phlebotomy tube stoppers, and key text is categorized in different color-coded blocks for easy and quick identification. While phlebotomy fundamentals are relatively the same as in previous editions, changes since the previous edition (e.g., in regulatory requirements, some state-specific) are nicely captured. This edition continues the website tie-in with additional teaching (lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations) and learning (videos, audio files, flash cards, animations) tools A nice addition is a 5" x10" color card cleanly displaying the recommended order of tube draw which can be conveniently posted. I must admit the logic of the memory jogger for the order of draw escapes me ("stop light red stay put green light go"); hopefully it makes sense to phlebotomists who really need to know this. Two competitive phlebotomy textbooks are The Complete Textbook of Phlebotomy, 3rd edition, Hoeltke (Delmar Cengage Learning, 2006), and Applied Phlebotomy, Ernst (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005). While all three contain superb factual information, this one is distinguished by its vibrancy and liberal use of photos and figures. My only reservation: it is a paperback book and therefore less durable for extended use.
Assessment: Get this book if you are a phlebotomy instructor or student. If an instructor, your curriculum is already 90% done. If a student, this book will serve you well in training and throughout your career.

    Problem with Answers

    The workbook answers had an outrages amount of errors - rendering the workbook completely worthless as a study tool.

    The textbook comes with a cd.

    Thetextbook covers all the bases of phlebotmomy. The cd is less comprehensive
