Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
There are hundreds of things, places, and situations that cause some people fear and anxiety. A phobia is an extreme fear that can be triggered just by a photograph of the object causing the anxiety. Achluophobia is a fear of darkness, octophobia is the fear of the number eight; and odontophobia is the fear of dental surgery. Being frightened by the number eight, symmetry, or frogs may seem frivolous, but to the sufferer it is very real. Fear of spiders or snakes seems more logical, even though most spiders and most snakes are harmless to human beings. However, there are some spiders that are dangerous and arachnophobia is the most common animal phobia. There are many obscure phobias but the most common ones are claustrophobia, a fear of confined or small spaces and acrophobia, a fear of heights. A related fear is cremnophobia, a dread of precipices. Agoraphobia is another common phobia. This is the fear of open spaces. Approximately one in every hundred people is agoraphobic. Fifty-three phobias are explained and illustrated in this interesting book. Large color photographs of the animals, places, and objects that cause many distress will help determine if the reader has any phobias. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
