They still bear a striking resemblance to Massachusetts' math rock wizards the Wicked Farleys, but Phonetic Disasters balances hard guitars and spazzy time signatures with straightforward vocals and harmonies a welcome addition to the mix as well as a healthy smattering of keyboards. Egon has retained its incredibly loose but cohesive feel; even when things ...

Egon has retained its incredibly loose but cohesive feel; even when things seem destined to fall apart the melodies are still evident, and somehow the band is always able to pull it all back together. Phonetic Disasters is more melodically satisfying than anything in the group's early catalog, and while these may not all be singalong tunes just yet, there are more than a few moments on the disc that will jam themselves into your head after a few quick listens. At little more than 30 minutes in running time, the disc never needs to or bothers to slow down and worry about wearing out its welcome -- it's all over before you notice just how many different grooves the trio has tackled, and the only choice is to go back and listen a little more carefully.
