Phonographic Yearbook: 1908 - Take Me Out With the Crowd

All Music Guide - Arwulf Arwulf
Archeophone's Phonographic Yearbook series focuses upon the most popular recordings from the dawn of the recording industry, beginning with a two-volume survey of the 1890s and then spotlighting individual years with music that sold well among that newly created demographic, the record-buying public. Some of the volumes in the series have certain artists in common, for the excellent reason that people like Arthur Collins, Henry Burr, Billy Murray, and the Haydn Quartet sold a lot of records during the first decade of the 20th century. 1908: Take Me Out with the Crowd gets its title from the second stanza of the chorus to Jack Norworth and Albert von Tilzer's "Take Me Out ...

1908: Take Me Out with the Crowd gets its title from the second stanza of the chorus to Jack Norworth and Albert von Tilzer's "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." The Haydn Quartet was the first to make a record of this song, and their rendition appears at the end of this handy 26-track anthology of vintage popular music. (Although Murray worked with the Haydn Quartet and has somehow since become closely associated with the original baseball anthem, he was not with the group in the studio when this record was cut, and he never recorded "Take Me Out to the Ballgame.") During the years before the First World War, the public was clearly fond of singers whose style and technique was derived from light opera and music hall entertainment. Examples in that category from this collection include Harry Macdonough, Alan Turner, Elise Stevenson, Frank Stanley, Henry Burr, and Lucy Isabelle Marsh. The Peerless and Haydn Quartets combined barbershop harmonies with the precision of the parlor art song, and their repertoire gradually accumulated novelty numbers with ties to vaudeville and a common theatrical milieu. Singers within this wholesome anthology whose approach is closer to the comedic are Billy Murray and Ada Jones; Arthur Collins and Byron Harlan, Eddie Morton and Clarice Vance. If you feel the need for a brief respite from all that singing and chattering, go directly to track 22 and listen to the Victor Orchestra's instrumental treatment of "Glow Worm," subtitled with the noble Germanic word: "Gluhwurmchen."
