    Worth Every Cent

When I bought this book I flipped through it and the pictures made me think that this was a really complicated process and that I'd have to learn the basics of quilting first but after watching the DVD and reading the book I realize that this is more like a "paint by numbers" process, in the end you have a beautiful work of art but you don't have to be Da Vinci to get there.

The book offers brief overviews of every step in the process, straight to the point so that you can take the next step without spending hours reading or looking up terms. The book is divided into chapters on:
1)the elements of good design- choosing photos, how to trace the photo, how to take better photos, understanding light and shadow, cropping photos for impact
    2) photo to pattern- combining photos for better composition, cropping clutter out of the background, creating a pattern without a computer
3)fabric collage- understanding color value and contrast, how to choose fabric, different types of backing, how to build more complex quilts
4)sewing it together-from the first stitch to the finished product, how to deal with the edges of the fabric and applique techniques
5)an advise section- naming your work, professional tips, how to find your own creative path
    6) an overview of about 10 different projects- brief overviews about the projects featured in this book. There are no patterns unlike many quilting books, this is an art book where she gives you her knowledge so that you can create something personal.

The best part is the DVD which basically summarizes the entire book in 30 minutes so the book becomes a reference guide. In the video the author and the host take you through one of the beginner projects from start to finish but they also touch briefly on most of the more complicated techniques used in the other projects featured in the book.

This is a great gift idea for a quilter or crafter.
