Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Quist
Following a similar pattern in all of her books in this "Start with Art" series, Thomas organizes her explanation of the art of photography by asking and answering common questions regarding where photographs are found, how they are made, and how they function artistically. She also demonstrates her answers with the use of both famous and common examples of photography. To vary the pattern in her books, she does vary the questions to focus particularly on the style of art she's addressing. In the case of photography, she addresses how photographers use lightness and darkness to convey different feelings, ideas, and moods. She also addresses the subject matter of portraits. She ends the book with explanations and pictures encouraging the child readers to practice this style of art. And of course, as with any similar work of nonfiction, Thomas includes a glossary of terms, an index, and a couple of web addresses where readers can learn more. I would have liked to see the names of the artists and the photographs, and even perhaps the museums where they currently reside, attached to the images for a more thorough education for the children—both to help them see the public value as well as give more appropriate attribution. Still, the book provides a nice basic overview of this style of art. Reviewer: Heidi Quist
