Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Maybe you know Bert Monroy’s breathtaking digital art from his amazing book Bert Monroy: Photorealistic Techniques with Photoshop and Illustrator, or his TechTV television shows, or his consulting with firms like Adobe, Sony, and Apple, or even his appearance on the Deluxe CD-ROM version of Photoshop itself. Now Monroy tours Photoshop 7, identifying new features and illuminating neglected gems that can make all the difference in your next project.

For example, you’ve been able to build custom brushes in Photoshop for quite some time, but have you explored the new Brush Presets yet? Monroy shows how to make magic with them. In older versions, Monroy created dense foliage by repeatedly “brushing” the shape of one leaf or leaf cluster; with a Brush Preset, he shows how to create a whole forest with a single stroke.

Monroy’s work is noted for his use of light and shadow. Here, he offers a complete walkthrough of creating shadows, from positioning to final touches such as gentle blurring and reduced opacity. Other highlights: making the most of Liquify; creating realistic reflections; and a whole chapter on textures that focuses on all sorts of wood grains, from bark to weathered old shore town sundecks. All in full color -- and all splendid. Bill Camarda
