Overview

What is the most important scientific process that takes place on Earth? Many scientists would answer: photosynthesis. This process has made our planet livable for millions of species by providing the materials and the energy that Earth's creatures need. Well-known science writers Alvin and Virginia Silverstein and Laura Silverstein Nunn explain how photosynthesis works, how living creatures on our planet use it, and how it relates to the greenhouse effect and global warming. The authors also reveal current research on photosynthesis, showing ways that scientists can improve food and its availability through genetic engineering, increase energy sources, and fight fatal diseases such as cancer.

This book on photosynthesis offers five chapters that give you specific examples of how photosynthesis works. from the begining to the end. In the first chapter, Food For Life, it tells where the word photosynthesis came from, a greek word meaning 'light' and 'putting together.' Also sertain materials that are rely on this process. The second chapter, Milestone Along The Way, reffers back to 1770, and what photosynthesis ment to people then. In chapter three, How It Works, gives you resoning for each step of photosynthesis. Talks about the roots, stems, leaves, stomates, and alot about chloroplasts and how that is involved with this most important process. In chapter four, Photosynthesis Today, talks more about how everything relates to eachother, and how animals, and plants have so much scientific necessitys in common. the last chapter, Photosynthesis In The Future, talks about the future and when it gets more populated everyone is going to need more. They talk about the improvement of photosynthesis and that when they can understand it better, scientist will be able to design better plants.
