    Great book???

I agree whole heartedly with what Phil McCartney said about this book. I have quickly made it through half of this book, but I wouldn't say that I know much about php or mysql yet. I am going to try to make it quickly through the rest of the book then go buy something else.

    Good starting point, but...

This was the very first PHP book I bought simply because of its price and how simple it appeared when thumbing through the pages. All in all, it is a great beginner's book as far as going through the motions of setting up MySQL, Apache, and PHP... however, when it came time for me to enter commands, modify files, or whatever I was being instructed to do, I was having trouble following the print because the characters are too close together. Instead, I found that I had to look at the screenshots in order to avoid getting syntax errors. The biggest problem I have with this book is that it doesn't go into any real detail about what it is you are doing and why. I never finished the book simply because I prefer knowing what a particular command or function is doing. About the only time I find myself using this book anymore is right after formatting my hard drive and having to re-install all my software again. I still haven't found a good quality book on PHP that I can call a 'PHP Bible'... but I'm still looking.

A simple yet very informative introduction into PHP.

This is an excellent book. A simple yet very informative introduction into PHP. Well written with a good layout (illustrated with screen shots). This book flows very well, and I would recommend this to anyone wanting to get into PHP programming. I have read some of Julie's other books, and she does a very nice job of transferring knowledge.

Could have been a great book

Most of the book is the best way to get into PHP and MySQL and is excellent. Parts of it, though, are difficult because they assume the reader knows more than I did. When my email exercise didn't work (the prologue said it was 'so easy') I contacted the author. She responded quickly but gave no answer other than I had to look elsewhere (but not where). With more thorough explanations this could have been a great book.

    Great Book!

I've purchased other PHP books but found them to be very technical. I don't have time to investigate each technical term as I'm learning. I found the screen shots & the easy language of this book to be absolutely fantastic in guiding me. Would definitely (& have already) recommend this to anyone looking to learn PHP.

    Julie knows Php/MySQL

Julie definitely knows the ins and outs of Php and MySQL - she helped me to install both on my Win98 machine, when others have given up already. Now I am happily learning more of Php/MySQl on my local machine instead of having to telnet to my virtual server. I am sure that this book will help Php/MySQL newbies.

Why I Wrote PHP Fast & Easy

PHP Fast & Easy was written specifically for the beginning PHP user; perhaps a person diving into PHP for the first time, or someone coming from another scripting language, wanting to see what the fuss is about. The style of this book is very visual: line-by-line, step-by-step instructions and explanations of the code you're being told to write, along with many screenshots of results along the way. This book contains a CD-ROM of required software, for both Linux and Windows plaforms: the Apache Web server, the MySQL database server, and PHP 4.0.0. The first three chapters are devoted to installing and configuring this software. If you don't know a thing about SQL, you'll learn enough to get you through the book, and will hopefully be surprised at the amount you understand, by the end. This book covers the essential elements of getting up and running with PHP: basic scripts like form mailers all the way through creating a few database-driven applications and working with sessions. No prior knowledge of scripting languages is assumed, besides a bit of HTML. Like my first book, PHP Essentials, this book should not be the only PHP book on your shelf. This is a 'get up and running' book, geared toward a particular learning style. Supplementary information for this and all of my books can be found at www.thickbook.com.
