Overview

PHP In Easy Steps shows you how to write web pages incorporating PHP scripts. These allow the exchange of data between a web browser and a web server, both on Windows platforms and on Unix-based platforms, such as Linux.
PHP In Easy Steps begins by explaining how to download and install the Apache web server, the MySQL database server, and the PHP interpreter. This allows you to establish an environment in which to run PHP scripts on your computer. Examples show how PHP scripts can generate dynamic content, manipulate files, store user-data, send email, authenticate log-in attempts, and communicate with databases.
This book makes no assumption that you will have previous knowledge of any programming or scripting language, so it's ideal for the newcomer to PHP. Each chapter builds your knowledge of PHP scripting, so that, by the end of the book, you will have gained a sound understanding of PHP and be able to write your own scripts.
PHP In Easy Steps has an easy-to-follow style that will appeal to everyone who wants to add PHP scripts to their web pages-from the enthusiasts or students who want to create PHP scripts for upload to their own ISP, to the web developers wanting to add dynamic interaction, or the programmers who wants to add server-side scripting to their skill set. And, all at an inexpensive price.

By far the best book I've come across for LEARNING php -- and at 1/4 the price of the other books. If you're new to php, you can't beat the way this book breaks down the individual lessons. Does it do everything? No. Is it error free? More so than any php book I've used. It is worth the price? Absolutely!

I can't be bothered to sit for hours slogging through some 1-inch textbook to find out how to code a relatively simple page! This book's lessons are short and concise. I highly recommend this series to anyone.

When I bought this book, I knew HTML very well but PHP was like trying to figure out Latin. With this book, I'm now writing html pages with php and am able to make use of MySQL. Even with a few errors in the book, I was able to figure out what was wrong and that in itself helped me learn how to write php.

I admit I was skeptical when I bought this book. I wondered if I could really learn something like PHP from a book that was so...well...thin. As it turns out, this is an excellent book. You will learn the fundamentals of PHP including how to make PHP work with MySQL. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn PHP.

While the concepts inside are easy to digest and understand, when it comes to *actually* using PHP, any help this book tries to lend falls flat. While newer versions of PHP have been released, much pertaining to the newer versions in relation to the book's version of PHP have been left out of the UPDATES section of the book's companion website. As a result, much of the code presented in the book is unusable, even with the small help given via the companion website. I am very disappointed in that there is no way to contact the author for clarification. There is not even a forum / discussion board available for the book.

The book seems to be all right, but there are errors in the way the examples are written. I have had to figure out how to make some examples work when the code that was offered failed to run, even after it was triple-checked. Page 45 of the text has one of the best examples of this kind of error.
