Are you an intermediate and advanced web designer looking to make the leap into server-side programming? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Kevin Yank, has done an outstanding job of writing a 5th edition of a book that provides you with a practical look at what’s involved in building a database driven website using PHP and MySQL. Yank, begins by telling you where to obtain the two essential components you’ll need: the PHP scripting language and the MySQL database management system. Next, the author introduces you to databases in general, and the MySQL relational database management system in particular. Then, he introduces you to the PHP scripting language, which you can use to build dynamic web pages that present up-to-the-moment information to your visitors. The author continues by bringing together PHP and MySQL, to create some of your first database driven web pages. Next, he shows you the essential principles of good database design, emphasizing the importance of data normalization. Then, the author covers some of the simple techniques that exist to keep your code manageable and maintainable. He continues by walking you through the code for a basic content management system that allows you to manage a database jokes, their categories, and their authors. Next, the author shows you some neat tweaks you can make to the page that displays the contents of your database—tweaks that allow it to incorporate simple formatting such as bold or italicized text, among other options. Then, he explains how PHP supports both cookies and sessions, and explores the link between the two. The author continues by showing you how to perform backups of, and manage access to, your MySQL database. He then covers some of the more advanced features of this language to help you juggle complex data like a pro. Finally, the author demonstrates how to speed up your website by creating static copies of dynamic pages at regular intervals—using PHP. This most excellent book is your map to the twisty path that every beginner must navigate to learn PHP and My SQL today. More importantly, by the end of this great book, you’ll have a grasp of what’s involved in building a database driven website.
