Overview

The science of phrenology, which sought to reveal people's inner characteristics through an examination of the contours of their faces, had profound effects on Victorian culture. This volume examines the origins, evolution, and spread of phrenological naturalism from its beginnings in Vienna to Britain in the 1810s through 1850s. Van Wyhe contends that the scientific, professional, and religious controversies over phrenology are best understood as competitions for status and authority between individuals rather than as manifestations of group conflicts. The text is based upon the author's doctoral dissertation at Cambridge University. Annotation © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
