Overview

This book provides the reader with the subject of physical chemistry as characterized by three main approaches: the discussion of bulk properties in terms of thermodynamics, the use of spectroscopy to explore the behaviour of individual atoms and molecules, and the analysis of the rates and mechanisms of chemical change.

A palletable book for the mathematically inclined...

I used this book as an undergraduate when I studied physical chemistry; while the book provides fairly detailed descriptions of physical principles associated with physical chemistry, it is seriously lacking in the derivation department. Most derivations in the book skip a large number of steps (most likely for brevity's sake); while some derivations are fairly intuitive and 'easy to work thru' the majority require some thought and the abscence of what I considered some essential steps made many hard to follow and in some cases downright incomprehensible. I do not reccomend this book to a biology or chemistry student not well versed in the mathematical arena; unfortunately I don't currently know of an alternative book in this area... for biophysical chemistry, use the three volume set of Cantor and Schimmel as it is the 'bible' of biophysical chemistry; or for an excellent physical organic textbook look to Gould's 'Mechanism and Structure in Organic Chemistry' (ca. 1960).

Not as bad as people say

I used both this book and the McQuarrie text. McQuarrie is excellent for derivations and fundamentals but Atkins text is more accessible to the average student. Most people give this book a bad review because their intellect was not sufficient to grasp the concepts explained therein. The answers in the back are occasionally wrong.

    P-Chem (Adkins)

This Physical Chemistry, is VERY hard to follow. After you get done with this book, you still don't know how to do p-chem. This book is not even good for referencing. I recommend you stay away from this book. (this book isn't even worth 1 star!!!!)

    Best Pchem author today

Dr Atkins is by far the best writer of modern physical chemistry texts. This book is essential to anyone new to the subject of physical chemistry.
