Description: This physical examination and health assessment book stresses the need to listen to the patient as well as do the "hands on" assessment. It also stresses the need for the nurse to be the instrument for data collection instead of reliance on technology. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose is to guide the reader through the health assessment process, to refine skills previously learned, and to acquire new ones. The authors more than meet these objectives.
Audience: The book is aimed at beginning level students and those individuals who need to refine or relearn skills at the advanced level. The author's years of experience in nursing education and teaching health assessment are obvious from the layout of the book that reinforces learning at every step.
Features: There are three new chapters in this edition that address new trends in healthcare needs: Domestic Violence Assessment, Pain Assessment, and Critical Thinking. The latter chapter is the first chapter in this book that sets the tone for how the health assessment and physical examination should be approached. All chapters present the basic anatomy and physiology, physical examination, suggested assessment tools to gather data, abnormal findings, cultural considerations, skills, bibliography for further reading, and critical thinking questions to facilitate learning. Palliative care/end of life care from an assessment perspective is not really addressed, yet this is an up and coming area of nursing specialization. The photos/illustrations are wonderful and help the student better understand the content.
Assessment: This edition is excellent. It addresses the most common needs that most of us find in teaching physical examination and health assessment. The focus on holism and movement away from technology to support assessment is a very good teaching/learning strategy. Too often students rely on monitors to provide the assessment information without really physically examining the patient. Inclusion of developmental and cultural considerations adds a depth to this content. Health Assessment and Physical Examination, 2nd edition, by Estes (Delmar Learning, 2002), presents similar material in a systems approach without the emphasis on holism and integration. This book, however, highlights the art as well as the science of nursing.
