From Isaac Newton and his study of gravity and the laws of motion to the inner workings of the atom the readers are introduced to each scientist through information on their childhood or early beginnings of science. From there, it is on to the research and discoveries of the scientific principles that made them famous. Pictures and diagrams help the reader understand the principles involved and illustrate some of the applications that have resulted from this discovery. An interesting section in each story details the implications of their work and how these principles can be applied to solve real world problems. Short passages include other scientists whose work is based upon the findings of the featured scientist. For each: there is a list of key dates in the scientist's life, timelines that depict the milestones of his or her work, and a political and cultural timeline to give the reader a sense of the connection to history. To assist the reader, a glossary and list of resources are provided. The other books in the "Facts At Your Fingertips: Great Scientists," series, includes, the Life Sciences, Chemistry, Earth, and Space Sciences, and Philosophy and Invention, and Engineering. The content level may be somewhat difficult for the younger reader, though illustrations and diagrams help guide the reader through the explanations of the scientific principles involved. Gr 8-10–These science-driven collections contain quite a bit more than biographical data. They provide explanations about important discoveries, related work, and social and political influences that impacted the subjects' work. Each book is a compendium of some of the most significant contributors to a particular sphere of science. The approximately six-to-eight page entries include important dates, photographs, diagrams, and sidebars on relevant scientists. The writing is often highly technical and some knowledge of the basics is assumed. Of particular interest are the time lines of both scientific focus and social/political background. The glossaries and resources for further information are exceptional.
