Piano Dance: A 20th-Century Portrait

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Kasunic
From a festive Chinese folk dance to a conga line in Hell, Gloria Cheng's exciting new recording takes a wildly kaleidoscopic tour of 20th-century dance music for the piano. Piano Dance showcases Cheng's chameleon-like ability to inhabit a wide range of styles with idiomatic ease. Never does she seem outside her element -- quite a feat, for this music ranges from manic tarantella Samuel Adler's Like a Tarantelle to listless rag William Albright's Sleepwalker's Shuffle to boisterous Irish reel Henry Cowell's Lilt of the Reel.
What further sets Cheng apart from many other pianists is an unassailable yet unassuming finger technique coupled with risk-taking interpretative panache. Cheng seems to go out on a limb with everything she plays: Federico Mompou's Canción y Danza has as much gentle rumination as George Antheil's Percussion Dance has ferocious abandon. Far from being a hodgepodge assembly of 23 pieces, the order and content of Cheng's provocative program contains much rhyme and reason. Savvy juxtapositions and groupings of pieces are especially gratifying. For example, Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu's alternately jolly and melancholic Polka gives way to György Ligeti's relentless Hungarian Rock, whose driving beat seems to spill over into Béla Bartók's hypnotic Rumanian Dance. After all that activity, Igor Stravinsky's moody and insinuating Tango comes as a welcome relief. Stravinsky's piece ushers in subsequent tangos by Samuel Barber and Per Nørgård, with a set of waltzes by Leo Ornstein, Francis Poulenc, Maurice Ravel, and Philip Glass on the way. Cheng never misses a step. Whether strutting Claude Debussy's Golliwog's Cakewalk, slinking Paul Hindemith's Shimmy, or kicking up her heels Alexander Scriabin's Mazurka, Cheng's fingers dance with verve, conviction, and consummate grace.
