All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
This CD features 16 different pianists from the 1920s and '30s on a total of 18 selections. The programming is pretty random and some selections such as Reginald Forsythe's "St. Louis Blues" and Clarence Williams' "Wild Flower Rag" are rarer than others. The other pianists are Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson the latter three individually and together in a trio, Fats Waller one number apiece on piano and organ, Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Bix Beiderbecke "In a Mist", Jess Stacy, Art Tatum "Tiger Rag", Earl Hines, Jabo Williams, Little Brother Montgomery and Cow Cow Davenport. This collection serves as a good introduction to prebop piano styles...
