History of Alabama by Albert James Pickett was first published in 1851. Pickett spent a good portion of his life researching his subject. He examined numerous primary source documents relating to the early exploration of Alabama and the surrounding regions. He also interviewed many old native Americans who related to him the history and culture of their various tribes. Pickett also explored Alabama, going to the actual sites of much of the action that he so ably relates. But the best thing about Pickett's History of Alabama is its sheer readability. It is a well told and fascinating story of the first three hundred years of European presence in Alabama. Pickett was not only a good researcher, but he knew how to write an interesting story. Pickett was not cursed with a stodgy or florid style of writing. Instead, his text is alive with action and information. This is a book that is hard to put down and is highly recommended.
