This is such a lovely little book and covers such an important topic. Bullying is a very real thing in schools, and as my kids get older, I need to prepare them for situations in which they may face bullies or see others bullying someone. Pickles and the P-Flock Bullies is a really good way to introduce the topic in an easy way. In addition to having an important message, the book has lovely illustrations... This is a nice book from one of my favorite pairs of authors/illustrators and would be a lovely addition to any child's home library!

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
Pickles is a young Orca whale who has to make new friends in her home in the waters of Puget Sound, in the State of Washington. Finding a friend to play with is not as hard as she imagines, but keeping a friend is much harder. Cosgrove paints a word picture of the natural beauty of Pickle’s home, and the riches of the land and the waters which are home to large and diverse populations of fish, mammals, and birds. Here they live their lives together. The clear pictures drawn by James help to capture those wild creatures that Pickles meets in her search for playmates. Readers will discover how Pickles got her name. There is something green that she carries around with her, and makes her easy to spot even in the company of other orca whales. James gives soft expressiveness to the creatures that Pickles meets. Pickles quickly learns that some birds make themselves feel good by hurting the feelings of others. When the gulls talk impolitely to Pickles about her new friend, a harbor seal, Pickles must make a decision about which friend will be the one she wants to keep for a long time. With some encouragement, young children may wonder who is the kinder friend, and who becomes the meanest friend. When someone gets teased and feels uncomfortable, or when somebody is picked on and teased, it is the right time to decide who your real friend should be. Cosgrove is the author of 300 children’s’ books, and 25 young adult fantasy novels. James is a native of the Northwest area of the United States and has illustrated over 85 books. His drawings about Pickles and friends help to tell Cosgrove’s story about one of the largest mammals that live in deep water. The story and drawings go together very well and will probably become make the book one of the most popular added to any child’s library. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy; Ages 5 to 8.
