Overview

An intriguing portrait of one of America's most famous couples.

John Adams was an American patriot and Founding Father, and Abigail, his wife, was his most trusted advisor for more than fifty years. While John served in both Continental Congresses, Abigail managed their farm within earshot of cannon fire. She later advised her husband through amusing letters as he served as our first ambassador to Great Britain. And when John was elected America's first vice president, Abigail vowed to be his "fellow Laborer"-and she steadfastly lived up to her promise.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Although neither one was impressed by the other when they first met, John and Abigail Adams grew to admire and love each other. Eventually, they got married and their marriage lasted for 54 years. This informational text highlights some of the couple's roles during the colonial period and the birth of a new nation. During his career, John Adams served as the first vice president, and later, the second President of the United States of America. Along with following John's career, readers have a glimpse into historical events of early American history and Abigail's thoughts based on her writings. The quotes from her writings provide interesting points for discussion and further research about the time period. Watercolor illustrations are featured in each layout; the gently sketched lines and soft colors in the pictures capture different moments during the Adams's lives. At the back of the book, there is a list of important dates. In addition, the quotations used in the main body of the text are listed; these quotes are referenced to their sources. The sources are listed in the bibliography which is helpful to initiate further research about the Adams. Students may also enjoy exploring the websites that are listed. The authors' notes include some additional interesting pieces of information. This book is part of the "Picture Book Biography" series. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

Gr 1–3—The Adlers' emphasis remains on John, but Abigail is acknowledged as an important collaborator in his life and work. The straightforward text presents a chronological account of Adams's life, including his unique role in defending the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre, his varied contributions to the founding of the United States, and his service as vice-president and president. While not flashy, the text is clear and accessible to young researchers. The softly colored watercolor illustrations of serene scenes perhaps do not do justice to the many dramas in the Adamses' lives, but they do provide a sense of the time period for young readers. This serviceable title will be useful in most libraries.—Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA
