Children's LiteratureThis is an excellent introduction to the world of exploration. Clear, concise language describes the travels and discoveries of humankind from the dawn of time to our current space age. The famous explorers such as Marco Polo, Magellan, Columbus, Cook and Heyerdahl are only part of the contents. Lesser-known people, such as Martin Frobisher, Jakob Roggeveen, John Franklin, Mary Kingsley, Wilfred Thesiger and Sylvia Earle are also included. All the wonderful and attractive illustrations add greatly to the text. Time lines and sidebars provide still more factual data that should fascinate young readers and lead them to want to learn more. Teachers and librarians will find this book is a first-class tool to use with middle graders as they begin a unit on explorers. 2004, Publishers Group West, Ages 9 to 12.
