Meet the Author

The ever-quotable Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, essayist, and poet who delighted Victorian England with his legendary wit. He found critical and popular success with his scintillating plays, chiefly The Importance of Being Earnest, while his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, scandalized readers. Imprisoned for two years for homosexual behavior, Wilde moved to France after his release, where he died destitute.

Dorian Gray, besides being an enjoyable read in the shallowest sense, is much deeper. The story is about a young man who makes a deal with the devil to stay young, while his portrait ages from time and from the physical effect of sin. This opening premise leaves much more for the reader to discover, as I did. The story unfolds slowly and deliberately, the twists of the story are terrible, and unforeseeable until the last moment. The most interesting aspect is it approaches the whole concept of sin and morals in a manner almost opposite to every other book. The characters view sin as something to strive for, pleasure as the only thing to live for. Sin is simply above the petty 'morals' of the age. This point of view will have you constantly re-evaluating yourself in your own spiritual portrait. This book is recommended for anyone who needs to see just how devastating sin can be, and just how wretched one man can get before atonement or damnation befalls him.

This book truly is a masterpiece in itself. at first i was weary to read believing it was to be a dry read, but luckly i held on and was pulled into this world of realization and it helped me to stand back and take a look at myself. i really want to go into depth about how great this book was, but then i would have to reveal parts of the book, and instead of revealing anything i advise everyone to take a chance on the book, and get ready for a journey that will have you questioning and looking at your own reflection.
