Overview

Paris—one of the most photographed cities in the world—is viewed anew from the eyes of nine local youths who have photographed what they consider to be their city's distinctive landmarks. Classic sites like the Eiffel Tower and the Pyramid at the Louvre are interspersed with personal images, such as a photographer's mother over a traditional French breakfast. The images, in combination with quotes from the young photographers, evoke ideas that challenge our conventional notions of landmarks and, at the same time, invite us to consider how we are marked by the communities in which we live.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Nine Parisian kids from the ages of eleven to eighteen were handed cameras and black and white film by the Getty Institute in 1997. They were asked to make portraits of the things important to them in their neighborhoods. The results, with comments in French and English, along with a foldout map documenting the photo sites, comprise this book. The photographs themselves are crisp and pure and marvelous. The kids' comments are interesting and sometimes unintentionally droll. The end result is a portfolio that could make Eugene Atget stand up and take notice. It's also an excellent model for teachers interested in getting students out of the classroom to study and learn about their environment.
