Overview

A face revealed, and rage unleashed — old anger set upon the world. Three sisters must come together to fight or worse fates will surely be unfurled...

The Bay Mirror is covering the grand reopening of Mural House, a San Francisco landmark built in the 1920s, and Phoebe invites her sisters to attend. Piper's got her hands full with P3, but Paige happily tags along to see the once-famous artists' colony that housed great art, passion, and scandal. Notable for all three is the story of the building's architect, William Lancaster, who, during the construction, fell in love with an artist — a young divorcée named Isabella Marshall. Their relationship was tumultuous at best, eventually ending in tragedy...and in William's disappearance.

The hoopla surrounding Mural House's reopening has made William and Isabella's love affair legendary. With the permission of Isabella's daughter, Lucile, Phoebe has been reprinting the couple's love letters in her column. She joins Lucile, now an elderly woman, at the gala's main event — the unveiling of a long-painted-over mural. Lucile is visibly upset when the mural is revealed; in fact, she seems horrified. Before passing out from fear, she whispers, "The evil has been released..."

Prologue

At first there was only darkness.

No, that isn't right, he thought.

It was important to be precise, to be as accurate as one could in all things. Wasn't that what a brain was for? Was it not with thoughts that a man shaped and controlled his world? If he began with a falsehood, did he not betray himself?

There had been something before the darkness.

Before the darkness, the pain had come.

It was so great and astonishing a pain that he sometimes thought the greatest astonishment of all was that he had endured it and remained alive. It had struck him from out of nowhere, seizing both his body and his will in a grip as unbreakable as the strongest iron. He ought to know. He'd tried his best to break it. Tried and failed. Time after time.

And it had been beautiful. That had been the most terrible thing of all.

It had been filled with colors, that pain. So bright and shining that they'd blinded him. Then the darkness had come. But not before the colors of the pain had incapacitated him, wreaking their havoc along each and every separate nerve ending in his body, seeking them out, as if the pain itself had been sentient, as if it had possessed a mind and a will of its own.

Then as swiftly as it had struck, the pain released him. His mind had floated in the dark void. He had no idea how long he was there. But when he finally began to awaken, to feel his mind at work again, he discovered that the colors had returned. Painlessly now, they surrounded him. Though he'd soon discovered they'd lost none of their ability to cause him harm.

He was trapped within them. The colors were a glorious spiderweb and he the unfortunatefly. No matter how he struggled, how he railed against his fate, he could not break free. An entirely new version of living hell. He still didn't understand how he hadn't lost his mind.

But he hadn't. And, slowly, something new had happened. Something entirely unexpected.

He'd begun to hope.

His enemies had not defeated him. He might be down, but he was far from out. Someday he would be released from his prison. Until then, he still had his mind, and his mind was strong.

Strong enough to save him in the first place. Strong enough to keep him alive. But he saw his error now, understood the way that they had ensnared him. Knew the part of him they'd taken and used against him.

He'd been impatient, too eager to work his own will. But in the darkness, he had time — time they had given him by trapping him in this beautiful and terrible place. Time he would use, to his own advantage this time.

And so he'd schooled himself to wait, the fly within the spider's web, spinning out his own web with each and every hour that went by. And the pattern was always the same, though the variations were endless.

No matter how long it took, how long he had to wait, he would find the way to make them pay for what they'd done. By the time he was finished, none of them would be left alive.
