Overview

To the outside world, they seem to have it all. Cassie Barrett, a renowned anthropologist, and Alex Rivers, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, met on the set of a motion picture in Africa. They shared childhood tales, toasted the future, and declared their love in a fairy-tale wedding. But when they return to California, something alters the picture of their perfect marriage. A frightening pattern is taking shape—a cycle of hurt, denial, and promises, thinly veiled by glamour. Torn between fear and something that resembles love, Cassie wrestles with questions she never dreamed she would face: How can she leave? Then again, how can she stay?

Acclaimed storyteller Jodi Picoult presents a moving new novel about a perfect Hollywood couple--and a not-so-perfect marriage. Rich in detail and emotion, filled with human drama and unexpected truths, Picture Perfect is the fairy-tale romance of anthropologist Cassie Barrett and Hollywood leading man Alex Rivers. But who will believe that Cassie is an abused wife?

Editorial Reviews

The Boston Globe
Picoult writes with a fine touch, a sharp eye for detail, and a firm grasp of the delicacy and complexity of human relationships.
The Washington Post
Picoult has become a master—almost a clairvoyant—at targeting hot issues and writing highly readable page-turners about them . . . It is impossible not to be held spellbound by the way she forces us to think, hard, about right and wrong.
Publishers Weekly
This politically correct Hollywood romance leaves no plotting stone unturned. For her discovery of an ancient human relic, glamorous UCLA anthropologist Cassie Barrett is rocketed to the prominence of a '90s-style Margaret Mead. As if that's not enough, she goes to Kenya as technical consultant on a movie starring hunk-of-the-month Alex Rivers. After a whirlwind romance, Cassie becomes the new Mrs. Rivers, toast of filmdom's beautiful people. But all is not bliss for the newlyweds: Alex's tortured past just won't let go, and Cassie must bear the brunt of his emotional scars. Perhaps attempting to salvage the predictable plot, Picoult administers to Cassie's bland character a dose of adrenalin-pumping amnesia. She also throws in a dollop of Native American culture and a noble savage who skirts the periphery of Cassie's tumultuous existence, always ready with sage advice, spiritual healing techniques and warm embraces. Some rather prettily told Indian legends are added to the mix, but the total effect is wide of the mark. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club selection; film rights to Dove Audio; audio rights to Brilliance. (Mar.)
Library Journal
Anthropologist Cassie Barrett, suffering from amnesia, is rescued from a church cemetery by Native American cop Will Flying Horse, only to be reclaimed by her Academy AwardR-winning husband, Alex Rivers. A positive pregnancy test triggers memories of abuse at the hand of her star husband, and Cassie turns to Will, who secrets her away in Pine Ridge with relatives for the remainder of her pregnancy term. All of the characters in this recording come from dysfunctional families and offer sad tales of childhood contrasted with details of life among Hollywood's rich and famous. Unfortunately, the audiobook's reading by Sandra Burr and Bruce Reizen is disjointed. Not a necessary purchase, although large popular collections may consider.-Sandy Glover, West Linn P.L., Ore.

Meet the Author

Jodi Picoult
Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult grew up in Nesconset, New York. She received her A.B. in Creative Writing from Princeton University, and her M.Ed. from Harvard University.

Biography

Born on Long Island, New York, Jodi Picoult was convinced that the tranquil, suburban setting offered no real inspiration to her for being a writer. There was no drama; just the daily grind of families living their lives. Eventually, though, the story of this challenge became the core of Picoult's bestselling novels.

Picoult studied creative writing at Princeton, and before she graduated, she had two short stories published in Seventeen magazine. This early success inspired Picoult to devote her life to writing. After college, she paid the bills with a series of copywriting and editing jobs, and she even taught eighth grade English. Marriage and children soon followed, and while she was pregnant with her first child, she wrote her first novel, Songs of the Humpback Whale, a remarkable tale told from five different points of view that heralded a bold new voice in fiction.

In subsequent novels—including phenomenal bestsellers like My Sister's Keeper (2004) and Nineteen Minutes (2007)—Picoult has mined the complex mysteries of everyday life: love, marriage, career, family. Faced with difficult, often painful moral choices, her characters struggle to find balance in an off-kilter world fraught with danger and shattered by terrible sociological ills like domestic violence, sexual abuse, and teen suicide. Though page-turners of the highest order, Picoult's stories avoid easy solutions and provoke thoughtful reading and animated discussion. Unsurprisingly, they are a favorite choice for book clubs.

From her web site, Picoult talks about the relationship between her family and her writing. "It took me a while to find the balance," Picoult says, "but I'm a better mother because I have my writing…and I'm a better writer because of the experiences I've had as a parent that continually remind me how far we are willing to go for the people we love the most."

Good To Know

"I've gone skydiving," she told us, "and I'd do it again—if I didn't have kids.

Picoult and her family own two Jersey calves, named Decalf and Coffee.

On her official web site, Picoult reveals some fun and fascinating facts about herself, including:

Before becoming a novelist, Picoult worked at a two-person ad agency, where her main responsibility was "to keep the owner's wife from finding out he was sleeping with the freelance art director."

If she could invite anyone, living or dead, to a dinner party, Picoult's guest list would include Ernest Hemingway, Alice Hoffman, William Shakespeare, Mel Gibson, and Emeril Lagasse.

Other than writing, other talents of Picoult's include making Linzer tortes and broccoli soup, and childbirth. "I'm awfully good at giving birth—quickly, no drugs, etc.—though that definitely has a limited appeal," she quips.

    Not one of her best

Normally I love Jodi Picoult's books and will buy anything written by her. This is one of her older books, and definitely not her best. Characters are one dimensional and the main female character is extremely weak. One small piece of the story about horses was laughably ridiculous--Jodi needs to do a little research or consult someone on subjects she is not familiar with. Would not reccommend this book unless you are desperate and have nothing else.

    Picture Perfect

This was an enjoyable read. I thought the characters and the story line were very good. Something that most people could relate to on some level. When I started reading Jodi's first book, I almost gave up on her because the story was long and drawn out and hard to follow. This book was enjoyable and seemed to flow very well. I enjoyed it. Its a quick read.

    Loved it!!!

Jodie Picoult is one of the best writers of our time! She manages to take situations that the public would refuse to accept and makes us listen to everyone's perspectives. And at the end of each book, you can't put blame on anyone, because EVERYONE has something to do with it.
This book, for me, is very touching. The main character reminds me of myself, I want to be an archeologist, and our personalities are also the same. Looking for people to save. So, due to that, I was able to connect with the character alot. I also like that you can't just jump to conclusions in the first few chapters, because Jodie Picoult makes sure that you are intruiged enough to keep on turning the pages.
    A five star book!

Another Great Read By Jodi Picoult

Like her other books Jodi Picoult has managed to captivate the reader in a thrilling plot which includes aspects of both a mystery and love story. Its a quick read, good for the beach, a rainy day, or just because.

    Not So Perfect

Not Picoult's best. I like her later stuff a whole lot better. This book seemed to drag on, and it was never thrilling and often boring. All the characters were frustrating at times, but were relatable. This could have been edited better, and it seemed to have a lot of stuff that wasn't neccessary to the plot, and its 400 pages could have been cut down some. But like all of Jodi Picoult's novels, the language and writing was beautiful.

    An amazingly touching novel.

A novel about a young woman suffering from amnesia and fleeting memories of domestic violence, PICTURE PERFECT by Jodi Picoult can touch the soul of everyone who reads it. The marriage of famous actor Alex Rivers and renowned anthropologist Cassie Barrett seemed to be as perfect as a fairy tale at first, especially for Cassie, who'd lived her whole life far from heavenly, but as all fairy tales, this marriage had its dark secrets.

As Cassie struggles to remember her life with the help of Will, a half-Indian half-white police officer fighting away the memories of his past, she uncovers more pain than she would've ever imagined could come from seemingly perfect Alex Rivers.

Staying with Cassie through her amnesia, her memories, and her fight to escape, the reader feels Cassie's pain, the silent argument with herself over whether to stay with her true love and die or to leave and live. Cassie's life is so real to the reader that PICTURE PERFECT is impossible to set down until you've finished.

    I highly recommend it.

This is not a book that I feel you really overly "LIKE" because of the subject matter. But I feel it was very well done. I truly felt as the characters felt and was really wanting thing to work out for them.

I think she did a great job putting you into the mind of both the abuser and the woman being abused. It showed how %95 of the time all was well and very happy and each felt it would not happen again. The remorse and guilt of both is accurately portrayed.

I also enjoyed the native american aspect that helps Cassey to appreciate what is important in life take control of her situation.

I'd rate this lower than a 1 star if i was allowed.

This story was ridiculous and quite predictable. I'm assuming the author was trying to get you to root for Cassie considering Alex was bad to her sometimes but I didn't feel bad for Cassie at all. I was actually rooting for Alex. I actually wanted to hurt Cassie myself. Oh and Cassie has this best friend when she was little and I got so tired of her having irrelevant flashbacks that weren't helping or hurting the story... they were just there for no apparent reason. Cassie's character was weak and being a woman myself... I'm quit offended. She was to "over the top" with her emotions and she was a terrible excuse for a woman. She was the typical character that you see in most "love stories". She's oh so in love with Alex and would do anything for him and this and that then destroys him. For no apparent reason. He told her how bad his childhood was and that he likes acting because he could become anyone he wanted to be but when Cassie took that away from him. She was a nobody and ruined Alex reputation as being a somebody. All the characters were weak including this one character called Will who helps Cassie out when he needs help. He was in love with her but he was rather boring and the whole story reminded me of twilight. The two guys fighting over a girl that has absolutely nothing special about her (bella). One was handsome and had it all (like edward) and one was indian and loved the girl but couldn't have her because someone else did (Jacob). I'm not a fan of twilight at all and the fact that this book reminded me of twilight turned me off from it even more. One more thing, Cassie had come down with amnesia. But throughout the story it doesn't really explain clearly how she got it because the story would skip around from Cassie, Will, and Alex's childhood, to them in the present being grown, to them being grown in the past. It didn't make sense and it was lacking. Horrible story. Pretty sad because her other stories are pretty good.

    Too Expensive and Horrible Book

I got this from the library because I REFUSE to pay that much for an old book on my nook. Anyway, I quit reading it half way through. Just couldn't finish it. Boring, stupid, one-dimensional. Can't believe Jodi Picoult wrote this garbage.

    A Must Read!

The main idea of this book, is a woman who experiences the perfect fairy tale marriage which then turns for the worst. Troubles begin, and gets worse. The author's purpose for this book, is to grab the reader in and show situations that readers also deal with. I think this book is one hundred percent amazing. I think this is a book that everyone should read. It almost gives you a taste of the real life. Jodi Piccoult has always written "heart grabbers" and "tear jerkers" and this book has not failed to show her ability to do so. She details all her stories and shows exactly how it is. I love this book so much, because it keeps you wanting more. The more you read, the more things happen which keeps you turning the pages. The story is a about an anthropologist who suffers from amnesia. Throughout the books she uncovers who she was and how her life was before. She realizes she had lived through tons of hurt and uncovers even more pain. After uncovering her past, she escapes from the hurt and learns about the real world along the way.The most important things about this book are the characters. The people she uses in the book, are your every day, normal person. They're down to Earth, and someone you can almost relate to. They're not perfect, and that's what gives this book so much understanding. You get to see someone's life. You get to see the things that some people have to deal with, and most people hide. That's the reason for this book, and Jodi Piccoult does it very well. Looking at other books of hers, this is one of the best. It's different and exciting, and I believe by writing this book she reached a new goal. Her other books are always touching, and this one also in a new way. I think that this is a must read book. It's great for everyone, and I'm sure you'll love it. You get to see something you never may have before, or let it come close to home and make you realize it's close to your situation. Jodi Piccoult is an amazing author and this book shows her talent. Find time, and definitely read this book!
