Overview

Photographer, author, and educator Roberto Valenzuela has a proven track record for teaching and explaining difficult concepts to photographers of all skill levels. His remarkable ability to break down complicated ideas into understandable, approachable elements that photographers can truly grasp–and then use their newfound knowledge to improve their photography–made his first book, Picture Perfect Practice, a breakout success.

In Picture Perfect Posing, Roberto takes on the art of posing. For many photographers, after learning to compose an image and even light it properly, a portrait can still easily be a failure if the pose is not natural, elegant, and serving the needs of both the subject and the photographer. Instead of just showing page after page of poses–like most posing books on the market–Roberto actually breaks down the concept of posing by examining the anatomy, starting with the core foundation: the spinal chord and neck. Building from there, Roberto discusses every component of what makes poses work, as well as fail. How should the model hold her hands? Bend her elbows? Position her fingers? Should the model look toward or away from the camera, and why? It all depends on what the photographer wants for the shot, and Roberto discusses the entire process, from the intent of the photographer through the execution of the pose. For those who have been discouraged by an inability to pose their subjects, or who have simply not known where to start in order to "figure it out," Picture Perfect Posing is the essential resource they need to learn how posing truly works, and how they can learn to direct the exact pose they need for the shot they want.

Meet the Author

Roberto Valenzuela is a photographer based in Beverly Hills, CA. He developed his unique teaching style by following the same practice regimen he developed as a professional concert classical guitarist and educator. Roberto believes that it is not talent but deliberate practice that is at the core of skill and achievement. He has traveled to every corner of the world, motivating photographers to practice and break down the various elements of photography in order to master them through goal setting, self-training, and constant dedication.

Roberto serves as a judge for photographic print competitions in Europe, Mexico, South America, and the most prestigious international photography competitions held in the United States through Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) in Las Vegas, NV.

Roberto teaches private workshops, seminars, and platform classes at the largest photography conventions in the world. He has been an international first-place winner three times and has been nominated by his peers as one of the ten most influential photographers and educators in the world. His first book, Picture Perfect Practice, became a bestselling photography training book, and it is sold worldwide.

Aside from the world of photography, Roberto is a high-performance remote-control helicopter pilot, a (not so good anymore) classical guitarist, and a table tennis fanatic. He is also a major foodie and is still searching for the most amazing red wine and the most pungent cheeses. His search for the perfect steak is over; he found it in the Japanese Wagyu.

If you're looking to learn more about posing, I can't recommend

If you're looking to learn more about posing, I can't recommend Roberto Valenzuela's new book enough. It's seriously AMAZING.

Heck, I even recommend this book to brides who want to know the basics on how to better carry themselves, stand, sit, ect to look more amazing and flattering in their photographs. :)

See, most posing books are a series of "example" poses- expecting you to memorize a certain number of "go-to" poses. But that's not true learning, that's a crutch for when you're in panic mode! (which is fine- it's good to have go-to poses- but there's SO much more to being stellar at posing!!)

By contrast, Roberto's book actually goes into HUGE detail in breaking down WHY certain poses work or don't work.

He goes step by step, breaking down each section of the body- for example, a whole chapter on hands, on weight distribution, etc. He even goes into the three main areas of the spine, and how each one plays into posing specifically!

Basically, he gives you the TOOLS to "build" any pose you need. By knowing the principles behind excellent posing, you'll be MUCH better equipped.

I've been shooting as a wedding photographer for nearly 10 years. And I'm already going through my old work and starting to see WHY this or that pose "looks wrong" or "worked". This way of looking at things is incredibly powerful- and, even better, it creates a foundation on which you can continue to build as you grow.

To those who say: "Some of these people look like models"- yes, some of the examples- particularly the "before and after" shots- are models. But the VAST majority of the images in this book are Roberto's actual past clients- brides and grooms, etc. The posing techniques taught in this book work for ANYONE. They are the building blocks of body language, and thus work for any type of "people" session.

If you buy anything this year for your continuing photography education as a professional, buy this book. Seriously.

This book alone has saved my love of portrait photography. In the past, I've just "winged it" like many do. Trying out this, and that, but never getting what I really want out of a pose. Roberto's book "Picture Perfect Posing" completely broke down all my questions with easy-to-understand solutions.

To read the words of a Master of photography, dealing with the same issues that I have was so comforting. My confidence already after reading it once has sky rocketed. No more will I be just guessing about what I want. Now I know what I want and how to get it from clients.

There is one downfall with the book.

After reading it, I can't stop looking at everything through my new set of eyes and critiquing all the ridiculously bad posing, so many get away with. Do the right thing and educate yourself! There isn't a better guide out there. Roberto Valenzuela literally wrote "The Book" on posing and I suggest all of you pick up a copy.

If I had to choose one and only one book about posing, Picture Perfect Posing would definitely be
my choice! Roberto’s approach is simply brilliant and never have I seen a system that clear
and well explained about such a complex element of photography.

This book will teach you the ‘’language’’ of posing and how to use it in each and every situation
depending on what you want to achieve. No more remembering poses, no more guessing and
no more wondering what to do with each body part.

This will definitely help you step up your game and gain more confidence in front of your clients,
whether it is a wedding or a commercial shoot.

I believe that no matter at what level of expertise you are, you can still benefit from this book.
Many thanks to Roberto Valenzula for being so transparent with his techniques and for
    sharing all this great knowledge.

I just wanted to thank you for writing both "Picture Perfect Practice" and "Picture Perfect Posting". I have really been pushing myself in the last year to see how far I can take photography in my life and I have read a lot of books. Most barely scratch the surface. Yours are extraordinary. I have read "Picture Perfect Practice" at least 5 or 6 times now and I keep learning from it. "Picture Perfect Posing" is even more impressive, if that is possible. There are no other photography books that come close to what I have learned in your two books. Thank you for giving back.
