Overview

This second book in the Art Explorers series introduces kids to the world of impressionism, featuring the art of five famous impressionist artists: Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Edward Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Mary Cassatt. For each artist, a color reproduction of his or her famous artwork is paired with questions to get kids thinking about what they see. A short paragraph explains the artist's intentions, emphasizing facts of interest to kids. Easy-to-follow activities then provide hands-on experience with the artist's techniques, subject, and mediums, each illustrated with examples by actual kids. Techniques include drawing, painting, pastels, collage, watercolor resist painting, pointillism, sponge painting, mask-making, printmaking, sculpture, and more.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book is written for an adult to read with a child, giving directions about what to do to make a color wheel, information about different painting techniques, etc. But, the book would be more useful for a teacher to use in a classroom. The author chooses a particular artist and his or her painting. Then, several questions are asked about the painting to help young children understand what is going on in the picture. For example, one question about ballerinas painted by Degas states, "If you could turn this picture on like a movie, what would happen next?" Then the art project is to draw people in motion with pastels, in the style of Degas. Other artists in this book include Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir, and Mary Cassatt. Each chapter includes an art project children can use to learn about the particular artist. The book ends with short biographies of the artists. 2004, Watson-Guptill Publications, Ages Adult.

Kirkus Reviews
Raimondo presents five Impressionist artists to young readers via guided views of their work. Separate notes to adults and children provide background information about art in general and the Impressionists in particular. She gives Monet, Pissarro, Degas, Renoir, and Cassatt a section each, in which she features one special painting and poses specific questions to help the children experience and understand the piece. Several pages of hands-on activities follow, focusing on the artist's style, technique, or subject matter. Step-by-step illustrations accompany clear instructions, and suggestions for additional activities are illustrated with samples of the projects completed by young children. Backmatter also includes brief artist biographies. The layout of each section follows a consistent, logical pattern that is colorful and graphically interesting. The work succeeds on several levels: young readers can pore over it and attempt some of the projects on their own or as a parent-child activity, and teachers will also find much that is inspiring and useful. Well done. (Nonfiction. 7-12)
