Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This catalog dips into the New York Public Library's vast print collection of American landscapes and city scenes, progressing from the country's beginnings to the end of the 19th century. The first volume contains detailed annotations of over 800 prints, which are then illustrated in the second volume. The author's research is meticulous, which makes viewing the often small, predominantly black-and-white illustrations particularly disappointing. The reproduction is fine, but the elements of composition and detail that make the prints so special are almost completely lost. Libraries with comprehensive fine arts collections will need this book, but given the importance and potential appeal of the subject, the author should have aimed for a larger audience.-- Stephen Rees, Bucks Cty. Free Lib., Levittown, Pa.
