Christian Review of Books
This is a story as complicated as life, as beautiful as love, and as real as the faith that guides the characters. I'm still amazed by it long after I've turned the last page; the character insights are profound, the action is gripping, and the understanding of matters of the heart and soul are so full that I feel like I learned something, not only about history, but about humanity. I highly recommend Pieces of Silver to absolutely anyone; you'll not leave it disappointed.

I loved the book. We often learn facts of World War I, but we never see the turmoil, not only external but also internal. The conflicts these characters go through are similar ones we often face today. We see the characters struggle and we cheer them on through the difficult times. Maureen Lang drew me to turn each page with anticipation. My imagination flew as I watched the characters go through sacrifice, betrayal, and prejudice with God by their side.

It's 1917, and America is at war with Germany. Liesel Bonner's world changes forever on the day she loses her job as a stenographer, simply because she's of German blood. She's an American citizen, born and bred, she's never questioned her loyalty to the United States. But government agent David de Serre does, and so does the country he represents. He also questions the allegiance of her beau Josef von Woener. Who will she trust? What path will she choose? Who will she trust? Liesel is torn between love for her country, her faith in God, and her longing for lasting love, in this book of betrayal and loyalty, in the year of 1917. What will she choose? Having never read anything by Maureen Lang, I didn't know what to expect. But this book was definitely worth my time! Almost as soon as I started reading I felt connected to the character of Liesel. Reading about her struggles, and how she dealt with them, was inspiring. She is such an inwardly strong character, yet vulnerable. But so remarkably strong. While David de Serre might not have been the hero in a red cape, he was very admirable. Not in the flashy sort of way but in the way that slowly-grows-on-you-and-you-don't-know-why. Which I thought was very well done. Plus he knows his Bible. The perfect hero. I'm a huge fan. The plot was skillfully woven, and encompassed most of my favorite things in one book! Those things are: intrigue, mystery, suspense, romance, history, touching characters, WWI era, & spies! Whenever I picked it up, from putting it down, I was instantly plunged back into the year of 1917. It didn't take time, just, BAM! And I was there. Definitely one of my top ten favorite reads this year - so far anyway! Also, I found the characters and dialog, warm, engaging and believable. I thought that it presented both sides of the conflict very well. Which is something that really caught my attention about this book. The new angle of German-Americans caught between two countries that they loved. It was fresh and intriguing. As a closing word, I found nothing that I found objectionable in the content. Just some kissing, but I didn't find that objectionable. So in the end I will most certainly be on the lookout for more books by Maureen Lang! Thanks!

Liesel Bonner is a German-American girl caught in the series of events that capture America before and during the Great War. In a series of a few days, her life at home and work is ripped apart. She loses several jobs because of her German last name-even though she is a loyal American patriot. Then, one day, a man named David DeSerre enters her life. A special agent at the FBI, he is trailing Josef, the man Liesel thought she would marry. Josef was a family friend, but no one knew that he was plotting espionage and treason to slow the American War effort and help his native Deutchland. Liesel is forced to choose between her country and between the love of her life. Maureen Lang weaves a powerful epic, driving the reader straight through the emotions and high drama of a romantic spy thriller. She takes us through the emotional journeys of Liesel and David and Josef, with every page a new harrowing twist of fate. Pieces of Silver is a classic tale of romance and intrigue from a seemingly lost American era: The Great War. This book was sent to me for review by Kregel Publishing.

Its been a long time since a historical romance set during WWI has stirred my soul and imagination. But with PIECES OF SILVER, Maureen Lang has succeeded in holding me captive with her no holds barred love story of international espionage, betrayal, and vivid characters that you either love or hate. Furthermore, her descriptive prose makes for the most enjoyable read and her surprise ending leaves you wanting more!

Sometimes it¿s easy to see racism and prejudice in today¿s world, but Pieces of Silver shows us up front and plain-faced the prejudices rampant when America was young. Then, racism wasn¿t only about the color of someone¿s skin, but their name and country of origin. Not only does Pieces of Silver show us the struggles of a young America, but it teaches us about forgiveness, tolerance and God¿s love. A great story. ¿ author of Pursued By Evil, A Dream Fulfilled and Haunted By Evil.

Pieces of Silver Maureen Lang has woven a captivating novel of love and loyalty during the time of the Great War. I promise, once you start it, you won¿t want to put it down. Liesel Bonner, a German-American girl, is forced to make a difficult choice. Should she betray Josef, the childhood friend she planned to marry, or protect him and betray her beloved country? Federal agent, David De Serre, who has been investigating Joseph, attempts to help Liesel and tries to keep her safe. Romance, history, and faith intermingle in this tender, well-written story.

I was hooked from the first page. My family has stories they've handed down from WWI, so I especially enjoyed this book. Lang brings to life a forgotten era, a land of immigrants, and Americans divided in their loyalties. Danger and intrigue were around every corner. Lang's true-to-life portrayal of the tension that dominated America during those years made it impossible for me to put the book down. I read into the wee hours of the morning to finish it.

Maureen Lang brings to life a time in our nations history that many of us know very little about. I enjoyed her strong development of the main characters. It was easy to enter into their lives and want to know what was going to happen next. The plot was believable, the emotions real and the suspense kept me coming back to find out what would happen next. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a good historical fiction with strong characters, historical accuracy, good suspense and romance.

¿Pieces of Silver¿ by Maureen Lang is a great read! It draws you into the story and the perspective of Lisel immediately. Set in the time of WWI, it provides wonderful, accurate historical information. This is great era and too little has been written about it in current novels. The perspective of being discriminated against for being fair-haired and blue-eyed with a German sounding name is a wonderful teaching tool for our current teenagers. It puts them in the moment and helps to personalize what it feels like to be hated for no reason beyond your looks. The best part is they are learning through an interesting upbeat story filled with hope for the future. I hope Maureen and Kregel Publications come out with a sequel soon. I know as soon as I hear about it I will order it and hope to find out what happens next. This is a great gift to give to older readers or teen readers, everyone can relate to the story and enjoy.

Liesel Bonner driven by her patriotic desire to serve her country is devastated when fired from her stenographer job because of her German heritage. Determined to be a productive American citizen, she reluctantly agrees to using a false name to keep her new job. Her falsehood is exposed by federal agent, David de Serre, who has been investigating her boyfriend, Josef Woerner, for espionage. Liesel will be forced to choose between her loyalty to God and country or Josef. Wonderful characters with a compelling story set in Washington, D.C. during the Great War. I couldn't put this book down untill I was finished. Hope there's a sequel!

My grandfather was a veteran of the Great War, the 'war to end all wars.' Sadly, in the shadow of the horrors of WWII, this important era in our nation's history is often forgotten. The author does a wonderful job illuminating the intrigue of espionage on American soil at that time, and she weaves a powerful story of betrayal and sacrifice with a depth not often seen in fiction. Sometimes doing the right thing doesn't feel right, but it still must be done. The heroine, Leisel, had some tough choices to make. As the story continued you saw that her loyalty to America and to her faith superceded all others. A very patriotic and uplifting story, Pieces of Silver was very had to put down. I enjoyed every page and found the story fascinating and very well-written. I admired the hero, David, for his steadfast devotion to God and country as well. The way their plight brought them together was rich, and the love developing between them was truly powerful. This story was worth reading, and unlike your typical war story, there was no actual war content in the story itself. It was more about espionage and the subversive tactics used at war time, and it had me on the edge of my seat. The coolest part of all was the ending. Methinks a sequel is in the works. I can't wait to read it!

Full of vivid descriptions and heartfelt emotion, Pieces of Silver is set in the beginning days of United States involvement in World War One. With a light touch, author Maureen Lang paints a picture of the plight of German Americans in this trying time. Heroine Liesel Bonner is a strong woman who is loyal to her family and to the people she loves. She is a well-rounded character who is courageous and intelligent, but who also makes human mistakes when thrust into a plot of political intrigue. What I find most appealing is the part faith plays in her life. When life is most confusing, Liesel turns to her faith for strength. This is not a book that uses a fictional story to promote Christianity, but a well-crafted and gripping story that contains characters of strong faith. Pieces of Silver is a wonderful love story told amidst a difficult political climate and will entertain any reader who likes history, romance or just a wonderfully told tale.
