Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
This children's classic is retold here by a children's author translated from the Italian. Accompanied by retro-looking illustrations, the story relates the plight of the village of Hamelin overrun by rats. The mayor of Hamelin promises a reward to anyone who can rid the town of the rats. No one succeeds until a stranger with a silver pipe arrives in town and makes a deal with the mayor to get rid of the rats. The stranger, or pied piper if you will, plays a tune and all the rats follow him to the river and swim away. When the piper tries to collect from the mayor, the mayor simply says, "thanks" is enough and the town's people agree. The piper, in retaliation, begins to play his pipe and all the children of the village begin to follow him, like rats. He continues playing and marches all of the children out of town never to be seen again. The town's people are saddened but are still too stingy to pay the piper. The story ends here and as with most fairy tales, boasts a moral of sorts about keeping one's word with the usual scary warning to children. A follow-up group of questions for discussion, a glossary, and some "fun" facts about rats are included. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.

The illustrations in this title are just outstanding - vivid colors and beautifully rendered.  The voice over is also done nicely. Both together will make your child happy to hear and read the story. I recommend other titles within this series.

Its description says that it is a charming and brightly illustrated re-telling of the story. I agree it is brightly illustrated but vehemently disagree with charming. This is not appropriate for children. I read with children regularly and will delete this free ebook as soon as this review is posted. Perhaps it is simply the story itself that irks me so greatly, but as I read this, I couldn’t help thinking that the piper is responsible for making a vague agreement with the town. After he rids it of mice, the reward he receives is not sufficient for him. That strikes me as an error in negotiating on his part. His response to this? To abduct the town’s children without explanation. That seems heinous and vindictive on a brutal level to me, particularly since the piper himself was as responsible for the deal as the town was. Perhaps I’m being too sensitive. Perhaps I’m overreacting to this old tale. Regardless, no child will be terrified by it from my hands.
