Library Journal
Ella Mae leaves her ailing marriage and lonely New York City life to seek comfort in her idyllic hometown of Havenwood, GA. A gifted baker, she decides that a pie shop is her destiny. There's magic in her culinary gifts: her freshly baked goods pick up on her moods (sad, happy, etc.), and then the eaters absorb the mood. Tragedy strikes when the local equine veterinarian is murdered, and Ella Mae's rolling pin is the weapon. Our sleuth scrambles to identify the murderer by working with the victim's son, renewing her friendship with a local firefighter, and baking pies that make people want to tell her secrets. VERDICT A little play on Jane Austen with a nod to Arthurian legend gets this new series from veteran author Adams (she also writes as J.B. Stanley and cowrites as Lucy Arlington) off to an enchanted start. A sensory delight for those who like a little magic with their culinary cozies; think Bailey Cates's recent Brownies and Broomsticks.

I was already a fan of Ms. Adams' Books By the Bay cozy mystery series, and I adored this newly released series entry. Her characters are magically colorful and the feel of this novel is a little more light hearted than By the Bay, although both series involve murders. In Pies and Prejudice, the main character returns home after 7 years, as a result of catching her husband en flagrante with neighboring twins. As she debates her future, her delightful aunts convince her to try opening a pie shop, since her pies are absolutely yummy. Unfortunately, during this process, she becomes the main suspect in the murder of her lifelong enemy's fiance. Get the book so that you can see how she tries to find the murderer and keep her dream shop afloat.

You will find this book absolutely impossible to put down until you finish the very last tasty morsel, and then you will remember it for months to come and want more. It's a fun, moving, interesting, quirky, and - did I say FUN? - book. I highly recommend it for your summer reading.

Pies and Prejudice by Ellery Adams has to be one of the best mystery books that I have read in a while. Ella Mae is a strong intelligent woman. She is surrounded by other strong gifted women, her mother, her aunts and Reba the woman that took care of her most of her life. Ella Mae has moved back home to her little country town of Havenwood, Georgia after 7 years of living in New York, thinking she is happily married she discovers her husband cheating . Between her cheating husband and her failed marriage, Ella Mae is feeling pretty low, but with the help of her mother and aunts she is able to get back on her feet doing what she does best, baking. Ella Mae is a very gifted baker, and soon she sets out to purchase a local building to open her own shop, but an old childhood enemy Loralyn is determined to see Ella Mae fail and let's Ella Mae know this in no uncertain terms. After a murder occurs in Havenwood and evidence links the crime to Ella Mae all seems lost, but Ella Mae isn't one to run away and soon is busy not only running her new bakery, but also trying to catch a murderer. To spice things up Ella Mae's big crush from high school is showing an interest in her, but it's complicated when your still married and under investigation for murder and trying to get a new business up and running. This book has all the twists and turns any person who loves a good mystery could want. Plus the added dash of the charm of southern living. Bonus material at the end of the book comes in the form of mouth watering recipes from the book itself.

Ella Mae LaFaye left her small hometown of Havenwood, Georgia to move to the big city of New York with her husband. But when she found him cheating on her with two women, her small hometown dreams sounded good again.   Ella Mae has always loved baking her sweet and savory pies and  now she's decided to drown her sorrows in doing just that.  Her Mom and aunts are choosing to support Ella Mae by investing in her Charmed Pie Shoppe.  Problems arise when her old time rival, Loralyn,  wants to buy the same spot to build a tanning salon. Loralyn, finance has agreed to buy this for her as a wedding present, but he's found murdered with Ella Mae's rolling pin.   Ella Mae needs to prove her innocence, but she also needs to get her pie shop up and running. With amazing help from her Mom and aunts the shop opens.  'Amazing' seems to be magical when it comes to Ella Mae's pies.  Does she have special powers?  Will she prove her innocence? Can she find a  new love? Are the woman in the LaFaye family all a bit special? This magical cozy is a yummy read for the brain cells!!  The descriptions of the pies alone are worth the read---and the bonus recipes are mouth watering too!   I really enjoyed the magical aspects of the story.  Loved all the 'sister support' too!! Sometimes I do feel food made with love has magical aspects to it. I'm usually not into magical books that are hard core magic, but i loved the lightness of the magic in this book.  Loralyn was fun to hate too!  Seems she'll live to flirt her way through more messes in other books. All the characters have become part of my world now, so I'm glad that more magical Charming Pie Shoppe mysteries are part of my future!

Ella Mae LaFaye moves back to Havenwood, GA from New York City after her marriage falls apart . Her mother and maternal aunts financially support her opening a pie shop. But a murder occurs that implicates Ella Mae. She sets out to clear her name and provide a successful new business in Havenwood. The pies she bakes take on her feelings at the time she prepares them. This cozy mystery combines an excellent murder plot, wonderful Southern characters, and a bit of mysticism to the first in a new series by well-established author Ellery Adams. Don't miss this one!

When Ella Mae LeFaye catches her husband in the act of cheating on her, she dumps a few baking ingredients on the guilty parties, picks up her Jack Russell terrier, leaves New York, and heads home to Havenwood, Georgia. There she reunites with her aunts and tries to work out things with her mom. Her mom was not happy when she got married and moved to New York and their relationship has been strained ever since. Ella has a gift for baking the most delicious pies. Her aunts convince her that her dream of having her own pie shoppe can still come true and help her open The Charmed Bake Shoppe right in Havenwood. Ella soon realizes that baking delectable pies is not her only gift, her pies are actually charmed. They have magical effects on the people who eat them. All is not magical though in Ella's life. The thorn in her side from the old days still lives in Havenwood and she is making trouble for Ella. Loralyn had plans for the storefront that now houses The Charmed Bake Shoppe and she vows to ruin Ella's business. Then Loralyn's fiancee is found dead. Apparently from a blow to the head. A blow delivered by a marble rolling pin. A rolling pin owned by Ella. It may take more than magical pies to get her out this mess. WHAT AN AWESOME DEBUT!! A well written plot set in the Georgia that includes horse racing, greed and corruption is the flaky crust of this enchanting story. Surprising what some people will do for money. This story has a group of very strong "gifted" women readers will immediately fall in love with. Ella learns about her gift gradually as she tries to find herself, the new and improved Ella, without the cheating husband. A husband that is not quite ready to just let Ella go. Her aunts are there to support her as is her mother. There is also the beloved Reba and her licorice twists. The woman who raised Ella with her aunts while her own mother was busy at Derby parties and Junior League events. Ellery is a master at character creation, even the supporting characters are complex. Some extremely likable, some we love to hate. This first installment is a nice slice of what I know will be a delicious series. Romance is set to bloom, the aunts have more secrets to reveal, Ella will start to really understand her charm, and murder and mayhem will be stirred into this fine mix. Peach Pies and Alibis will be served in March and I can't wait for the first bite.

I am a big cozy fan- but a bit picky- it needs to have a main character I can identify with- other offbeat characters- a good plot- a bit of fun and a cute dog. This book meets all these things and more. I can't wait for the next one in the series.

I liked it in the end, but when I started it I almost rejected it because of the effusive language. The overly wordy descriptions of the smallest details of sights, sound, smells, etc. almost put me off. But I stuck with it and enjoyed the story and will probably read the next installment. It has humor and warmth and characters (many of them odd ones by design). Worth considering if you like recipes, oddball Aunts, Southern settings & a hint of magic.

In this new debut series, we are introduced to the women in the LeFaye family. This charming whodunit exudes southern hospitality in the face of murder, mystery, mayhem with a splash of magical delights. Add in deliciously appetizing pies and romance and you have the makings of a wonderfully enchanting story that I want to see continue for years to come. When Ella Mae becomes the prime suspect in a homicide, exposing a killer becomes a top priority as her mother and aunts use their special talents in gathering clues to clear Ella Mae’s name. It was fun watching Ella Mae realize the powers that she bestows every time she bakes one of her savory pies. This character-driven story boasts a well-written plot, a great cast of characters and excellent dialogue. This is a bright beginning to a pleasantly appealing series and I look forward to more mystical adventures with the LeFaye women of Havenwood, Georgia.

Ellery has done it again!!! I loved the town Havenwood Georgia. I didn't want to put the book down. Ellery writes about towns that you would love to visit or even move to. You get so attached to the characters that you can't wait til the next book comes out to see what they are up to next. The mystery keeps you guessing until the end. Great read and I can't wait til the next book comes out-Check out her Books by the Bay series as well.

This book was an absolute delight. The characters felt like my friends well before I'd even made it to the halfway mark. In my opinion, that takes a special skill as an author. I was already a fan of Adams' Books by the Bay series, and I just might like this series better! Either way, I will not only be reading both series in future, I will actually pre-order them on my Nook! (Something I never do - so that should tell you something). Grab this one & snuggle up for a truly enjoyable experience and a great mystery.
