Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Pig and Duck are buying a car and can't agree on the color. Red? Green? Then a friendly used-car salesman suggests the greatest vehicle of all -- a rainbow colored truck! A terrific introduction to colors, this bright, lively, rhyming book features a peek-through window and a movable color wheel on the cover, allowing little ones to make their own favorite color combinations.
Children's Literature
Pig and Duck go to Happy Harry's Deals on Wheels when their trike loses a wheel. Yes, it's absurd--"Here's our bike and here's a buck!" they say. Harry answers obligingly and incredibly, "Come on in, boys, and buy a truck." But they can't agree about the color. As they name preferences, Harry suggests compromise. When it's yellow versus red, "How about an orange one instead?" Black or white has him offer gray. They go through the primary colors becoming more and more irritated with each other, until Harry finds a solution. Lorenz's vigorous black brush drawings with just enough casual color add vitality to what might otherwise be a routine didactic lesson couched in simple verse. He demonstrates the color blends as the speech balloons overlap and Harry shows them an appropriately colored truck. A billboard on the cover has a truck-outline cutout where, when a wheel is turned, the color can be changed, along with that of Harry's necktie. Fun reinforces basic color mixing, but there is no red on the turning color wheel. 2000, Little Simon/Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division, Ages 3 to 6, $10.95. EXCELLENT BOOK OF COLORS

This is an excellent book for teaching colors to young children. It even takes it a step further by teaching the children what colors you can get by mixing two other colors (i.e. yellow and blue make green). The simple and rhyming words are easy to follow for young children, but not as boring as other colors books like 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear.' The story also teaches compromise. The pig and duck are arguing over what color truck they should buy. In the end they compromise and drive off happy. The color wheel on the front cover keeps my 10 month old son interested too!!!
