Children's LiteratureOften jokes and riddles require a sophisticated knowledge of language since they rely on homonyms and variations of familiar words. The jokes in this early reader will fall pretty flat unless kids know quite a bit about pigs and their habits. If you do not know that a pig is a porker or that ham and bacon come from a pig then many of the jokes will not be the least bit funny. The same is true of words such as snout, squeal, sow, runt, wallow and hog which are all part of pig lore. Therefore, for maximum enjoyment teachers and caregivers might want to make sure that kids are steeped in pig lore before they try to read this book and squeal with delight at the hogwash presented. A Dial "Easy-To-Read" Level 3 book which features harder words and a longer text for kids who are reading on their own. 2004, Dial/Penguin, Ages 6 to 8.
