Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Quattlebaum
A tiny porker loves spending time with his bespectacled, "soft and squishy" Granny because she's as "lively as a family of leaping frogs." So when she fails to arrive for a visit, Piglet sets out to look for her. Along the way, he shows the skills Granny has taught him—balancing, somersaulting, hiding—to various neighboring animals. When Granny finally shows up, Piglet decides the wait has been worth the surprise she shares: a mudslide, with a whole new slippy-slithery skill to enjoy together. The language and watercolor illustrations are as kid-friendly as Granny herself—a senior citizen who's a playful child at heart. Reviewer: Mary Quattlebaum

PreS-Gr 1—In this creative team's third collaboration, irrepressible Piglet looks forward to a visit from Granny. Even though she is "soft and squishy," Granny always has "such good ideas for things to do." Waiting by the gate, the youngster becomes impatient. To pass the time she practices some of the tricks her grandmother taught her. Her farmyard friends admire Piglet's ability to balance on the stone wall, chase butterflies, and do somersaults. As they praise her, they also provide reassurance that Granny will no doubt be there soon. And she is. King's bucolic watercolor-and-ink illustrations enliven Wild's sweet but repetitive narrative. In a gentle palette of pastel shades he deftly captures the special relationship between the two characters. This title can be paired with Piglet and Mama (2005) and Piglet and Papa (2007, both Abrams), or any number of great intergenerational picture books.—Linda L. Kirkus Reviews
Though Granny Pig is soft and squishy (and wears glasses halfway down her snout), she's still lively and playful. So whenever she comes to visit Piglet, they fill the day with lively activities. One day she's late, but Piglet doesn't run out of activities. She balances on a stone wall and talks to Cow, chases butterflies and talks to Horse, somersaults down the slope and talks to Duck, plays hide-and-seek in the grass and talks to Sheep. When Granny finally arrives, she promises a surprise, which turns out to be...a slithery mudslide! King's soft, splashy watercolor vignettes, lightly outlined in black ink and set against generous white space, give the story a nice bucolic flavor. The text is rendered in a pleasingly large font, its positioning on the page subtly abetting the book's gentle pacing. The action's in the lack of action. For toddlers and preschoolers still learning to entertain themselves during moments of empty time, Piglet's resourcefulness, even in her impatience, stands as a worthwhile lesson.
