Overview

Once a year the pigs throw a big bash. This year turns out to be the greatest "pignic" of all. Each pig in this rhyming alphabet book brings a favorite dish, from Auntie Anne's apple pie to Zak's zucchini bread. Twenty-six members of a hog family attend a potluck "pignic'' in this alphabet book. There's no plot, just an alliterative parade of pigs bearing food, from "Aunt Annie made apple pie" to "Zak baked zucchini bread." Miranda (The Elephant at the Waldorf) selects vittles ordinary and odd ("Ivan churned the ice cream. / June brought jam in jars. / Karl made pickled kumquat mousse, / and the lemon tarts were Lars' "). Hoffman (Three Sisters) adeptly illustrates the edible fare, shown displayed in colorful blue and terra cotta crockery. Unfortunately, the illustrator's pencil-and-colored-ink hogs are singularly unappealing. Their drooping ears and slack, pinkish-gray skin lend them a disconcerting, geriatric look; a drab palette of beige, gray and pink adds to this impression. What might have been a festive occasion is dampened by the pigs' glum expressions-readers will RSVP regrets to this pig-out. Ages 4-6. (Jan.)

K-Gr 3-Twenty-six members of a pig family gather for an annual outing, each bringing a potluck specialty-some familiar and some unusual, but all alliterative. "Evan cooked eel and eggplant stew./ Fern fried fifty fish./ Gram made cold gazpacho soup./ Hank had a hominy dish." There are other alphabet feast books available, such as Anne Shelby's Potluck (Orchard, 1991) and Crescent Dragonwagon's Alligator Arrived with Apples (Macmillan, 1987), but what makes Pignic special are Hoffman's droll, pencil and colored-ink illustrations. Each "pignicing" porker has a distinct personality and a flair for presenting his or her culinary delight. As readers move through the alphabet, more and more action is shown in the background. The annual pig picnic brings out an alphabetical roundup of relatives and creative dishes for the family potluck: "Auntie Anne made apple pie. Ben brought beans from Boston." Dressed in bizarre costumes and with a dizzying array of gastronomic delights, the pigs partake of their picnic. Hoffman captures their antics in quaintly fascinating, humorous watercolors, with Miranda's zesty alphabet rhyme forming a nicely balanced whole. The letters of the alphabet are plain and easy to read, and the strong rhythms of the text contribute momentum to the unique family reunion, which is surely the "finest pignic ever!"
