Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Full of humor and slurps, high jinks and burps, the pigs who invade the narrator's quiet evening of reading in this liveliest of picture books not only cause pandemonium, but run up a huge pizza bill--until their host takes charge and makes them clean up their piggy mess. Cavorting through the book's pages are ``Black pigs, white pigs, / Brown and pink pigs, / Making-oatmeal- / In-the-sink pigs.'' They wear tutus, baseball uniforms, crowns, kilts, high hats or just their underpants. They arrive by bus and train, by plane and boat (the ``S.S. Swine ''); eventually, even Elvis (or an Elvis impersonator) shows up, wearing a crown and shades, and sits in a chair in the midst of other pig musicians. With great enthusiasm, the insouciant pigs throw pizzas like frisbees and plead, ``Don't make us go, /Don't say good-bye,'' until the narrator gives them permission to stay so long as they clean up their act. From the narrator's initial Charlie Chaplin slip on a banana peel to his final dream of more ``pigs aplenty, / Pigs galore!'' children will enjoy the rollicking rhythm of the devilishly rambunctious poem and the abundant comedies in the illustrations. This is McPhail at his whimsical best. Ages 3-7. (May)

PreS-Gr 1-- Crunch, munch, slurp, burp! As a man sits, quietly reading, these suspicious sounds and the appearance of mysterious shadows herald a piggy invasion. As pigs of every size, shape , and dress (including Elvis) arrive at his house in every possible vehicle, a riotous party begins and lasts through the night as the perplexed narrator looks on. He finally loses his temper and orders a cleanup before falling asleep surrounded by the revelers, dreaming a piggy dream. McPhail's colorful illustrations and rolling rhyming text perfectly capture the spirit of these invaders. These porkers have real personality and wonderfully expressive faces and come as cowboys, skateboarders, ballplayers, bagpipers, kings, queens, and a rock band. The story is great for reading aloud--the illustrations are large and clear with only four lines of text per page--while individual readers will enjoy looking at the marvelous, funny details on each page. Not only for fans of McPhail's other pig books, this title is a must for all picture-book collections. It's a thoroughly enjoyable romp. --Mary Rinato Berman, New York Public Library

Late one night a man sits reading. He thinks he hears the sound of feeding. He certainly does. It's pigs! And not just any old pigs. There are "Pigs in tutus, / Pigs in kilts, / Pigs on skateboards, / Pigs on stilts. / Pigs from England, / Pigs from France / Pigs in just / Their underpants" (make that a bra and underpants in one piggy's case). The rhyme is" bouncy enough, but it's the pictures that will have parents and kids howling. Using deep watercolors set against a black background, McPhail presents a magnificent group of porkers, whose capacity for costumes and capers is truly wondrous. We have rapper pigs, Elvis impersonators, and members of various sporting teams. They not only arrive by bus, train, and plane, but they also eat everything in sight, and then have the audacity to order in pizzas--which they use for a boisterous pizza fight. Though the man tries to rid himself of the pesky piggies, he finally realizes he's fighting a losing battle. McPhail, author of the Pig Pig books, is obviously no stranger to the species, but in this tale the pigs run completely amok, much to the enjoyment of everyone--except, perhaps, the man who just wanted to spend the evening with a good book. Kids will find this a very good book indeed.

    Plenty of Cute Piggies!

I love this book for so many reasons. It has PIGS and who doesn't love pigs. It has a great rhyming text that children and adults love. My students love the phrase "Pigs from England, Pigs from France. Pigs in just their underpants." That line causes us all to crack up. We use this book when we celebrate Nation Pig Day on March 1st. I also have this book in my reading center and it is chosen for independent reading over and over again. I have also given this book to my neices and nephews as a gift for birthdays or just because every child needs a pig book.

Great book!Fun for children to hear and adults to read! Highly recommend.

First saw this book on "Between the Lions". My grandson loved watching the show and seeing the book on the PBS show. When we bought the book, he was so excited to see it, hold it and have us read it over, over and over again. He's not quite 3. Another 4 year old grandson loves it, too. Plus, adults love to read it!

    The pigs have it!!!!

This is currently my three-year-old's favorite book and it is a contest between my husband and me to see who gets to read it to her. David McPhail writes a fun story about his house being invaded by pigs. The story reads smoothly with rhyming verses of pigs from England and France and some in 'just their underpants.' The pigs wreak havoc on his house while playing their games, until he calls an end to their shenanigans.
