Harriet Pig is an unstoppable, unflappable force, out to right the world. In this collection of four stories, she realizes her dream to fly, helps a friend overcome a fear of heights, trains for a swim race against a boastful goose, and repays in the extreme a mouse that saves her life.

This transitional book is more challenging than an early chapter book, but still accessible to beginning readers who want to laugh as they follow Harriet’s adventures. Leslie Tryon’s charming black-and-white illustrations perfectly capture the lively spirit of adventure found throughout the book. Harriet’s barge-ahead personality provides the laughs, as she does whatever it takes to accomplish her ends.

In four stories, Harriet Pig realizes her dream to fly, helps a friend overcome a fear of heights, trains for a swim race against a boastful goose, and more than repays the mouse who saved her life.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-In these four episodes, winsome and spirited Harriet learns to fly with the help of wires during the school play, helps Penny Porcupine overcome her fear of heights, competes in a swimming race, and almost wears out her welcome when repaying Homer Mouse for saving her life. Each vignette is told with an economy of smoothly flowing words and concludes with a happy resolution. Harriet is a likable, outgoing character whose antics are sure to evoke giggles from readers. Charming black-and-white illustrations are generously placed throughout the book and enhance the humor of the text. A fine choice for reading aloud, this entertaining offering will also appeal to new chapter-book readers.-Lynn K. Kirkus Reviews
Harriet Pig and her friends team up for four sweetie-pie adventures. First Harriet proves pigs can fly as she triumphs as the fairy in the school play. Then Harriet is the friend who helps her pal Penny Porcupine overcome her fear of heights. Braggart swimmer Lucy Goosey is forced to eat her own words after eating too much of her own sweets. Homer Mouse learns how to assert himself in the face of Harriet's overwhelming gratitude at having her life saved. Tryon's delightful pen-and-ink illustrations bring life to the predictable text. Ample white space, generous font, and predictable plot, all hallmarks of an early chapter book, appear on these pages. However, awkward word choice makes this average fare for new chapter-book readers. (Fiction. 6-9)
