The triumphant fourth installment of the award-nominated John Pilate Mystery Series!

John Pilate reluctantly returns to tiny Cross Township...a mutated Mayberry packed with guns, a serious lack of anti-depression meds, a rampaging country crime boss and an imaginary friend who won't shut the hell up.

Once a hero, now Pilate is broke, bored and forced to take a job imbued with more authority than the dogcatcher but less respect. What's worse, there's criminality afoot and nobody to deal with it but Pilate.
Sure, things could work out just fine...then again, it may come down to spilling Pilate's Blood...Thicker Than Water, Twice As Deadly.

There’s nothing more compelling than a tale of a hero shoved off his former pedestal—remember Iron Man 3 and Stark’s niggling self-doubt? For some reason, Pilate’s Blood is reminiscent of that, yet it’s more—I loved the first three books when they came out, and I’m glad to have decided to check out if author Alexander Greenwood has a new book. Imagine my delight when I discovered Pilate’s Blood. First off, I love how Greenwood makes his hero vulnerable—it pumps much-needed verisimilitude into the character and makes him as believable as the fellow sitting next to you on the subway. But more than that, the book brims with a wicked sense of humor—it stalks at you as John Pilate struggles with his meds or his imaginary friend, or when he’s trying to extend his patience as humanly possible with the kind of buddies he has. And as if that was not enough, John Pilate, this time,  is forced into a job position with almost zero respect—which works “great” for his already tattered psychological situation. But trust an author lie Greenwood to turn this otherwise sorry state into a funny rollercoaster tale of mystery and suspense. Greenwood’s prose, as always, crackles with wit and panache—there’s never a boring moment, even in those scenes where “nothing” is supposedly happening. The author writes in such a way that even the simplest things are described in interesting ways that hold you rapt in attention. A rampaging, entertaining read, indeed—check out the sample pages and you’ll see what I’m talking about! Highly recommended to everyone!
