I have practiced Pilates for a number of years and found Pilates Fusion to be one of the best reference books written. The author guides the reader in understanding how Pilates can, and should be a part of a total fitness program. As in any endeavor, a clear and concise explanation of the foundation and principles of any fitness activity is of utmost importance. Pilates Fusion offers this opportunity to the reader. I highly recommend this book to anyone who seriously wishes to positively affect their well being and level of fitness.

I really like Shirley Archer's Pilates Fusion because rather than talking only about the choreography ( i.e. the 'how to's') of the exercises, she stresses whole body awareness and connection. This is the first pilates book I've seen which effectively combines inner focus and breath awareness with the exercises. She draws in a spiritual component using eastern terms such as chi and visualizations to develop and strengthen the inner connection to the exercises.One of the challenges in teaching pilates is how to encourage students to focus inside their bodies. Shirley Archer's book has given me many tools to assist students in developing inner focus in their pilates practice. We in the west tend to emphasize performance, i.e.,what the excercise looks like. I have found that people gain more from the exercises when the conscious combination of breath and visualization accompanies the teaching of the specific choreography of the exercise. Shirley Archer's book has helped me improve my teaching skills and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in improving their own pilates practice. This book is a terrific addition to any pilates lover's library, is a pleasure to read and very informative. I also like the fact that the book is in a ring binder format, so it can lie flat and stay on the page you are interested in referring to while you practice the excercises.
