Pilgrims on the Sawdust Trail: Evangelical Ecumenism and the Quest for Christian Identity

Overview

"During the past generation, American evangelicals have moved from the margins to the mainstream of religious life and have become a powerful force in American politics and culture. This shift has brought challenges to evangelical identity as well as opportunities for mission and outreach. It has also created new conversations among evangelicals and between evangelicals and those from other Christian traditions, groups long separated by deep theological and historical differences." "How can Christians of various faith traditions work together?

What face can and should Christians today show the world? Pilgrims on the Sawdust Trail brings together scholars and church leaders to examine the new ecumenical conversations and relationships among evangelicals and the following groups: fundamentalists, Pentecostals, mainline Protestants, and Roman Catholics. The fourteen contributors, seek to forge a common Christian identity without glossing over the deep and meaningful differences that continue to exist." Pilgrims on the Sawdust Trial, the first volume in the Beeson Divinity Studies series, offers pastors, students, and interested lay readers much food for thought, even as the church actively pursues the goal of Christian unity.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This collection of essays, the first in the "Beeson Divinity Studies" series, has been assembled from a symposium where evangelicals shared their views, practices, and aspirations. Written by 14 contributors (among them Joel Carpenter, Gabriel Fackre, and Thomas Oden), the essays point to a growing evangelical Christian presence in the West, particularly in the global south, Latin America, Asia, and Africa, where evangelical Christians now outnumber evangelicals in America and Europe three to one. In our mainline churches, evangelical renewal is becoming noticeable. As discussed, evangelicals come in many varieties; some continue to follow pursuits as separatists even in their own denominations, while others have begun to engage in ecumenical dialog. As Mark Noll comments, things are changing and changing fast. Although the essays are uneven in quality, and it is a challenge to find a unifying theme owing to the broad scope, the collection as a whole provides valuable insights.
