As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Iceberg Slim's life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. It is a trip through hell by the one man who lived to tell the tale—the dangers of jail, addiction, and death that are still all too familiar for today's black community. Overview

A blueprint. A bible. What Sun Tzu's Art of War was to ancient China, Pimp is to the streets. As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Iceberg Slim's life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. It is a trip through hell by the one man who lived to tell the tale—the dangers of jail, addiction, and death that are still all too familiar for today's black community. By telling the story of one man's struggles and triumphs in an underground world, Pimp shows us the game doesn't change; it just has a different swagger.

Only Slim could tell this story and make the reader feel it. If you thought Hustle & Flow was the true pimp story, this book is where it all began. This is the heyday of the pimp, the hard-won pride and glory, small though it may be; the beginnings of pimp before it was dragged in front of the camera, before pimp juice and pimp style. Though it is a tale of his times, it will remain current and true for as long as there is a race bias, as long as there is a street life, as long as there is exploitation.

Meet the Author

ICEBERG SLIM (1918–1992), a.k.a. Robert Beck, was born in Chicago and initiated into the life of the pimp at age eighteen. He briefly attended the Tuskegee Institute but dropped out to return to the streets of the South Side, where he remained, pimping, until he was forty-two. After several stints in jail, culminating in a ten-month stay in Cook County, he decided to give up the life and turned to writing. With a family to feed, he folded his life into the pages of Pimp, which emerged as a definitive chronicle of street life. Slim was catapulted into the public eye as a new American hero, known for speaking the truth whether that truth was ugly, sexy, rude, or blunt. He published six more books based on his life and different aspects of the ghetto black, pimp community. Slim died at age seventy-three in 1992, one day before the Los Angeles riots.

CARY HITE has performed in several theaters across the country as a cast member in the longest running African American play in history, The Diary of Black Men: How Do You Love a Black Woman? He also appeared in Edward II, Fences, Macbeth, Good Boys, Side Effects May Vary, and the indie feature The City Is Mine. He has voiced several projects for AudibleKids, including Souls Look Back in Wonder, From Slave Ship to Freedom Road, and Papa, Do You Love Me?

    Pimpin Pimpin

First of all id like to say that I don't read much, but once I started this book I couldn't put it down. This book pulled my coat on the ins and outs of the grimy underworld of pimping. Once I was done I felt like it almost educated me. If you look deep enough you will see that he gives us insightful information on how to maintain relationships. This book is a must read for fans of black hardships.

    1940's Pimp Slang

The writing style, particularly the slang, was hard to digest at first. It took some getting used to and at times clarity suffered. The storyline was graphic and well executed. The descriptions of his thoughts and personal relationships greatly helped with understanding his world. I would give this book 5/5 if the slang wasn't so thick and outdated.

I don't understand why anyone would desire this lifestyle...

I've been hearing about this book for my entire life. Most people I know who have read this book have always painted it as a "life changing experience" once you have closed the last page. I think if I had read this book back when I was in my twenties, I may have felt the same.

However, at the age I'm at, and with my understanding of the type of psychological tactics that are played from the streets to the high-rise, I'm less impressed with the occupational skills of the author and more in awe of the vivid descriptions of the era that created him.

Let me make this clear: there is nothing really deep about being a pimp. The only requirements are to find yourself a highly damaged young woman (the younger the better) who has experienced sexual, emotional and physical abuse, and then trap her in a love-hate relationship where she will spend most of her time trying to get you to stop hating her.

Even Iceberg Slim himself says that a productive sex worker is a masochist with self-image issues. I've been around enough people like this (too close really) to see how that game works. Sure there are a few other things you can toss in the mix to amp up the dysfunction, but for the most part, mix one part troubled female with one part slightly sociopath controller and you too could have made a few bucks.

Nevertheless, there is nothing like having it spelled out to you and the language in Pimp alone will keep you glued to the pages. However, you have to be prepared - this book is slang HEAVY! In fact, there is so much slang that there is a glossary attached to the book to help you get through it without losing your mind. Honestly, that may not be enough for some, but, for the most part, you will be able to use context clues to figure out what is happening.

On top of that, the stories are excellent. Scoop it up and read it.

    It's.. Alright??

I'm in between good and bad with my feelings on this book. I was not to fond with the writing style of this story. Even though it had a glossary at the back I still did not understand some of the words.

In the beginning I was very upset and had to force myself to get through it but toward the middle it started to pick up and keep my attention.

The scenes were very VERY graphic. This is another one of those reads that should be for adults only.

It was a very insightful read. But it just wasn't something I would read again. I'm just not feeling the story. This was his life, nothing fictitious about it. and because of that I can't dislike it.

    must read book

I recommend this book as a must read book, because it enlightens the mind and takes you on a tour in the world of pimps, though its thought provoking but the lessons in the book can be applied in daily life endeavours ,so this is a must read book as well as good worth of literature for your money.

    Iceberg Slim Comes Through Again

I just now got around to reading 'Pimp'. I have read every other Iceberg Slim book and I have to say that this on is the best. Originally I thought nothing could top 'Trick Baby', but I was wrong, yo. First off, let me say that I am a pimp and there is no shame in the game, jigga. I gets all the ends from my womens and tend to slap a few who front on me, ya dig? I may be chubby, but Iceberg Slim don't front on nobody, fat or not. I also eat cake batter. Thank you

    Very good reading!

I have read alot of books about the street. I know for a fact that iceberg slim will grab your soul and really make you think of a life style and bring you to a world that most of us only dream about. I have read alot of pimp books, like Don magic Juan and Andrew stone wall jackson, and Donald Goines. These are all great books but, if you want your coat pulled or just like reading I would recommend "PIMP" to any reader.

Pimp One hell of a book

I thought this book was exellent it explored the harsh life of pimping in the twenties. I would recomend this novel to anyone that enjoys reading about drug addiction prison time and other dramatic topics. This book gives an insight of the life of a pimp and the life of a prostitute. The book is easy to read and their is alot of interesting twenties slang in the book. This book has a glossary of slang in the back so it is easy to understand the slang dialect the book presents.

Can't live without reading this one.

This book is a necessity of life whether you think you're going to pimp or you have to learn about history. True pimps appreciate the love put into this book, wannabees think this is a manual on life. I appreciate the honesty by Fleck.

    Great Book...NOT 'Pro-Pimping' though !

It is interesting to see so many reviewers here act as if this book is a 'how-to' manual for pimping. The whole premise of the work is to deter would-be macks from the game. One of the realest books I've ever read...if you don't feel Iceberg, you must be deaf.

    Foundation of the Game

Classic art of any kind is timeless. The game laid down is this book is as true today as it was when Ice lived it and transcribed it to print. The circumstances change, but the game remains. Far from glamorizing the life, 'PIMP' breaksdown the rules and regulations along with the highs and lows. Since the pimpin' and whorin' ain't limited to hustlers and hos, I recommend this to anyone interested in the power of the mind and 'JIB' to help achieve success (be the pimp) or avoid being 'turned out' (be the ho).
