One of the world's foremost authorities in applied linguistics, Dr. Pimsleur revolutionized the teaching of languages with his theories of Phonetics and Phonemics, first developed at UCLA. The Simplest, Most Effective Language Course Ever Developed!

Using the unique method developed by Dr. Paul Pimsleur you will learn a language the way native speakers do-through exposure to vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation all at once, in phrases and conversational speech. And by applying Dr. Pimsleur's two key proven principles-the Principle of Graduated Interval Recall and the Principle of Anticipation-this program delivers results faster and more effectively than any other language-learning method-whether classroom or packaged.

The Principle of Graduated Interval Recall-This is a complex name for a very simple theory about memory. In his research, Dr. Pimsleur discovered how long students remembered new information and at what intervals they needed to be reminded of it. If reminded too soon or too late, they failed to retain the information. This discovery enabled him to create a schedule of exactly when and how the information should be reintroduced.

This program is designed to remind you of new information at the exact intervals where maximum retention takes place. Each time your memory begins to fade, you will be asked to recall the word. Through this powerful method, your new language skills move from short-term to long-term memory without your being aware of it.

The Principle of Anticipation-Before Dr. Pimsleur created his teaching method, language courses were based on the principle of repetition. Teachers drummed words into the students' minds over and over, as if the mind were a record whose grooves wore deeper with repetition. However, neurophysiologists tell us that, on the contrary, simple and unchallenging repetition has a hypnotic, even dulling effect on the learning process. Dr. Pimsleur discovered that learning accelerates when there is an "input/output" system of interaction, in which students receive information and then are asked to retrieve and use it.

The Principle of Anticipation requires you to "anticipate" a correct answer. Practically, what this means is that you retrieve the answer from your own memory, based on earlier lessons, before it is confirmed in the current lesson.

The Pimsleur® Method gives you quick command of the language's structure, so you can easily apply your core vocabulary in everyday conversation.

At the age of 22, with english as my only language, I taveled to Japan and lived there for two years. During this time I became fluent in spoken Japanese, basically by immersion. I distinctly remember the processes I went through as my english thoughts transformed into Japanese thoughts and speech, to the point where I was dreaming in Japanese. I had spent 2 years in High School studying Spanish from books and taking written tests. After 2 years, I could not keep up with a basic spoken conversation in Spanish. I have always been intimidated by the Chinese Language and, therefore, avoided it. A couple of years ago I tried a Chinese CD-ROM Package with books. The results were the same as my experience with Spanish. However, my job now necessitates that I have a basic understanding of Chinese. The PIMSLEUR method of listening, imitating and responding is the best I've used so far. I feel like my mind is going through the same process as my experience with learning Japanese. This makes me very excited, because I know that this is best way to learn a language. If I ever want to learn another language, I will start with PIMSLEUR.

I used this 10-CD set to and from work. And in just a month or so, I had mastered the phrases included on the CDs. The Pimsleur method reminds you of words and phrases you had been introduced earlier, and it works well. I am now looking to purchase the next set of CDs. Hen Hao!

This is an excellent way to start learning Mandarin (Putonghua) Chinese. The pronunciation is very close to the Beijing dialiect which is the standard for Mandarin. The learning style is very effective and ensures that you are able to recall phrases and words in pressure situations. The only downside is that sometimes it is hard to disinguish the exact pronunication becuase their is no accompanying pinyin characters. For this I would recomend a good english to chinese dictionary.

I am currently taking Mandarin Chinese at a local College. This course on CD has proven invaluble to me to learn and quickly master the spoken part of the language. Highly recommended!

My husband is surprised that I'm able to advance so quickly using this series. It's so enjoyable. When I'm not able to get more than 60-70% on a given lesson, all I need do is listen to it again 3-4 times and it's there for me!

I'm not a rank beginner with Mandarin, but this course was a decent, refresher to kick my mind in gear, especially considering the price (cheap). I listen while driving, and need to stop the player often to think before speaking. I found that the CD would skip to the next track often when resuming play. There are two tracks per disc, each 30 minutes in duration. To skip back and then cue to find my place repeatedly was very discouraging. My player might be a little flaky, but it's only on these discs that I noticed this flaw. Beware of lesson 9 on disc 6: there is a clear mistake, in the discussion of buying and ordering (as in a restaurant) things. The listener is asked to say 'I would like to order tea or beer'. following the pause the mandarin sentence 'Wo xiang mai chi huo yu [not sure of this spelling] pijiu' is played, which means 'I would like to buy tea or beer'. the editor missed this mistake. It's subtle but it's a key gaff since the discussion is differentiating between buying and ordering. This course got me back into Mandarin, so I'm thankful for that. I would not have been so successful as a brand new speaker.

This product is great! I am going to take Chinese in college in the fall and many people discouraged me from taking it because it is so hard. After listening to these tapes, I can have a conversation in Chinese! I now feel that I will do well on all my tests and will understand what my professor is saying because of this program. I can't wait to get the next set of tapes. If you plan on going over to China and conversing the people, this is definitely the best product!

This program is great! I bought these CDs so i could prepare myself to take Chinese in college. So many people discouraged me from taking it because it is so hard, but this program is very helpful. I now feel comfortable that when I do take Chinese in college, I will do well on my tests and will understand what my professor is saying. This program breaks down the words syllable by syllable and you are able to have a conversation in Chinese. I can't wait to get the next set of CDs!

What a fantastic return on a 30 buck investment. I wonder if the more elaborate Pimsleur sets are as effective. If so, they're probably worth the high price.

It's good; I'm also a student using it to supplement a Chinese course. The method they advertise really works - just when you've forgotten something they ask you about it again :) (then let you hear it again of course). Mostly I'll echo the other reviewers - there are subtleties that are hard for Westerners to hear and which you ideally would have mouth diagrams and pinyin to clarify; unfortunately, this contains only CDs. But, there are just a few words like that, and you won't be far wrong anyway. Too, this doesn't have that great a vocabulary (maybe 1/5 of a first year course) But it's worth the money, there's no substitute for being able to spend time hearing and speaking the language and absorbing the conversational patterns. For what it's worth you can compress all ten discs into one in .mp3 or .ogg format without perceptible loss of quality. It's too bad that there doesn't seem to be a sequel.
