Overview

Miami sets the weirdness bar, and Serge Storms is back in action and ready to pole vault over it.

First, there's the media frenzy over the "Hollow Man," a gutless corpse found on the beach. And yet people aren't dazed to find dead sharks in downtown boulevards. Could this be the work of Serge? And why is he photographing foreign consulates right before a critical summit comes to town? Is it because Serge wants to become a spy? He senses that something big is about to go down in Miami that might involve a recently reactivated CIA cell.

The intelligence community isn't amused and wants answers. How did Serge and his sidekick, Coleman, get cozy with the president of a banana republic? And when did everyone in the city forget how to drive? Meanwhile, a mysterious man is shipping military arms, causing Homeland Security to take measures. The chaos escalates as Serge hurtles everyone toward a fateful climax, destined for the summit jamboree on Biscayne Bay.

Put on your favorite pink flamingo shirt and find all the answers in . . . Pineapple Grenade!

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Dorsey dishes up his Miami mayhem with a side order of mordant wit in his 15th Serge Storms novel (after 2011’s When Elves Attack). This time, Serge dresses up in a homemade superhero costume (his stoner sidekick, Coleman, is the Human Torch) and designs unique ways to kill the miscreants who blight Florida, like vaporizing their internal organs with liquid nitrogen and a turkey baster. Serge’s other campaign—to get hired as a spy—turns dangerous when it sets two competing but equally corrupt CIA bureaus on his tail, while gunrunning, oil spills, political spin, and a touch of romance complicate the dizzying plot still further. The varied locations—Biscayne Bay’s “Stiltsville” houses, the Charles Deering estate, the airport from which Amelia Earhart’s final flight took off—are real but no less offbeat. Though the book’s formula will be familiar to series fans, neither Dorsey’s fast-paced prose nor his delight in skewering human foolishness has lost its mischievous sparkle. 8-city author tour. Agent: Nat Sobel, Sobel Weber. (Feb.)
Sun-Sentinel
“Pineapple Grenade is a topsy-turvy, slap-happy romp through Florida.”
Gainesville Times
“Pineapple Grenade displays Dorsey’s talents as a comedian, a Florida historian, a political and social commentator, and a well-seasoned writer.”
Ventura County Star
“A “guy” book, a real “man’s man” kind of novel. But kind of fun for the ladies to enjoy as well - they kind of give women an insight into the weird, wonderful way a man’s mind works when the boys are let loose with their toys.”
Richmond Times-Dispatch
“A blast… side-splitting satire.”
Oklahoma City Oklahoman
“Hilarious”
Denver Examiner
“A successful blend of high stakes thriller action a la Miami Vice with laid back beachcombing style.”
Go386.com
“Bestseller Dorsey dishes up his Miami mayhem with a side order of mordant wit … neither Dorsey’s fast-paced prose nor his delight in skewering human foolishness has lost its mischievous sparkle.”
All Good Things and More
“A rollicking ride”
Miami Herald
“Dorsey fans clamor for Serge. Dexter just can’t compete with this guy. For non-stop spy-jinks and neo-crusted cackles, head down to Miami for Tim Dorsey’s explosive Pineapple Grenade.”
Kirkus Reviews
Serge Storms (When Elves Attack, 2011, etc.) bumps it up a notch, joining a CIA operation so covert even the agency doesn't know about it. Convinced that he may be wasting his considerable talent for mayhem by confining himself to killing bad guys one at a time, Serge decides to go global. A day after their flight from Tampa somehow never gets off the ground, he and perma-buzzed pal Coleman drive to Miami and check into the Royal Poinciana, whose crumbling aqua trim appeals to Serge's sense of nostalgia. He gets himself a quick gig exporting cheap souvenirs to third-world countries. But he has his eyes on a bigger prize. He and Coleman visit the consulate of Costa Gorda and offer to spy on—well, whoever needs spying on. Security kicks them to the curb, convincing Serge that they've been hired. After a hasty visit to Mahoney, who's retired from an FBI career dedicated mainly to stalking Serge, the newly minted secret agents set off on a surveillance tour of pretty much anyone involved in the upcoming Meeting of the Americas Conference. (Serge does take time out to dispatch several carjackers in bizarre and painful ways, since someone has to keep the predators in check.) It isn't long before he attracts the attention of Lugar and Oxnart, rival CIA field supervisors, each of whom suspects that Serge is the other's secret weapon. Don't they realize that Serge belongs to no man, having dedicated himself wholly to Truth, Justice and Florida Trivia? Dorsey's 15th pits Serge against what may be the only folks as dysfunctional as he is: members of the international intelligence community.

You will never look at Home Depot the same!

I am a big fan of Tim Dorsey, and have followed Serge and Coleman throughout their literary journey. I was pleasantly surprised with Pineapple Grenade, it was a hint of the earlier books with so many angles and pokes at politics, it was a refreshing break from real life. This book had me laughing out loud more than once. I still find myself cheering on Serge as he makes up his crazy schemes and shopping trips to Home Depot, while he still manages to save a South American President from assassination and keep Coleman alive. The twists and turns keep coming, and I had quite the guffaw every time they made up a new threat color for the Homeland Security "thermometer" ('but it's a different shade of red!"). If you like Dorsey's other novels, you should try a Pineapple Grenade.

Ten 5 star ratings from nookie/texters - how can your conscience

Ten 5 star ratings from nookie/texters - how can your conscience even allow you to rate something you haven't read - Oh, I get it - you don't care about anything other than yourselves. What is disturbing is that the obvious girl texters are so subservient sounding and the boy texters are seemingly in power. Girls - get your act together and become independent and proud. Don't let some guy dictate your life for you. Guys - learn what respect is and be caring and conscious of your actions. Be your own person.
