Two girls who love pink try to outdo one another

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Stephanie R. Pearmain
Rose and Valentina are best friends who both happen to love pink "more than anything else in the world." This starts off as a fun fact for the girls but starts to pose a problem when jealousy creeps in. First Rose showed off her new pink lunch box. Then when Valentina showed off her new pink backpack—decorated with pink heart pockets, rose began to get a little jealous. She is happy again when her dad paints her chair pink and she is very excited when she receives an invitation to Valentina's pink party. Rose and her mom make a beautiful pink princess dress and a pink present for Valentina. But when Valentina prances around in her pink tutu and shows off her pink playhouse it is too much for Rose. She storms out and misses the party. When everyone has gone home Valentina apologizes for being a show off and the girls realize they don't need to be jealous. The Pink Party is a entetaining book with beautiful illustrations and a theme that many young readers will probably relate to. The color scheme is carried out well from their pink-related names to the colorful illustrations. It has vibrant pinks and greens that are beautiful to look at. The illustrations are full of movement and life...and fabulous costumes. One might well want to throw a pink party after reading this book! Reviewer: Stephanie R. Pearmain

K-Gr 2—Best friends Rose and Valentina share a love of everything pink, but Rose grumbles to herself when she thinks her pal is trying to outdo her. At Valentina's all-pink birthday party, her jealousy takes over when her friend's ballet costume outshines her princess dress. She storms home and misses the party, but later Valentina comes by to apologize for showing off and they make up. The bubbly story moves along briskly with simple sentences. The digital illustrations are cheerfully rendered with bright splashes of color. In contrast, Rose's growing jealousy is aptly portrayed by a gray scribbly cloud over her head. The rosy-cheeked girls are endearing, and Rose's pet poodle is a charmer. This sweet story delivers a moral about friendship in a pleasant package that is sure to appeal to petite lovers of all things pink.—Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT
