Overview

Looking for the next big thing? While world-music fans were swooning for Cuban septuagenarians, the rest of the world found Elvis Crespo. The 28-year-old Puerto Rican phenomenon ascended to the pop firmament with "Suavemente," the title track off his platinum 1998 release, and introduced merengue to the masses beyond the Latin mainstream. Now follows PINTAME, with 14 tracks capitalizing on the "Suavemente" formula: hard-hitting grooves slowed down just enough so the piano-driven melodies snare ears as well as feet; Crespo's signature vocals and crowd-moving, chantlike coros; and the stop-on-a-dime studio band that's tighter than the Lycras in San Juan. And like that of its predecessor, this disc's title came from the mouth of Crespo's little boy, Elvis Jr. Don't get it wrong -- these aren't the antics of a one-note, one-hit wonder; Crespo, a former member of Grupo Mania, has been on the road to fortune for more than a decade. His relentless pursuit of pop (his child-abuse ballad "Pequeño Luis" would clean Celine Dion's clock) is the mark of a seasoned performer and audience pleaser. It helps that merengue, the Dominican style that's infiltrated the whole of Latin America and beyond, is one of the world's most addictive rhythms. Trust us, PINTAME is a veritable party all by itself.
