Authors Karida Collins and Libby Bruce open their Notions Bags to extol the pleasure of social knitting with their book Pints & Purls portable projects for the Social Knitter. To Collins social knitting is sharing your love of knitting with a group of friends in finding a good venue outside the home by packing your knitting bag and going social with friends. Bruce provides guidance as to how to make venues not previously thought of knit friendly such as bars or places of social drinking compatible in sharing ones love of knitting with social intercourse. Things to consider are Lighting, Timing, The Crowd, and Volume of the meeting place. Bruce also includes a caution for those women considering a Singles Bar on catch-up with-the-girls night as not an ideal venue for knitting.
Collins and Bruce are on a first name basis from the get go of the book. They not only provide patterns for the variety of projects offered but enlist an excellent cast of North Light Books of Cincinnati, Ohio to show case their works and those of Contributors that make Pints & Purls an outstanding book. In addition to the artwork and color coordination the superb quality of photos by Ric Deliantoni make it a must have book. This is a great gift for the holiday season. I have given several out, and received nothing but praise for it. The response most appreciated is "I am going to make that scarf," or one of the many items shown in the book. Make someone happy, Pints &Purls is a great start.

It's entertaining and the instructions for the projects are easy to follow. The general instructions for the terminologies used and detail descriptions for the stitches worked are excellent and very easy to understand.

I liked the portability of the patterns and the range of difficulty. By the way, pints in the title refers to how many drinks you can have at the pub and still be able to knit the more complex patterns. All in all, a well-written, fun book that fits a niche. I am sure we all have a selection of baby books and afghan patterns; this is a good addition to your knitting library!

For anyone that is addicted to knitting and enjoys taking their knitting with them to the bar this is such a fun and well put together book. The patterns are interesting and well written and the commentary is a hoot. The difficulty rating for the patterns is listed as the number of drinks you can handle while knitting. The most difficult being a cartoon of a VW Beetle and a Designated Driver, the easiest being 4 beer bottles. Just too cute! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys knitting, and especially those who enjoy doing it in public at the pub!

This is a cute book with some fun and easy patterns. There aren't any Pubs in our area, but could see brining this book and my knitting to one for a fun knit night.
