Blacklick, Ohio, U.S.A. 2000 Hardcover New 0071344209. FLAWLESS COPY, BRAND NEW, PRISTINE, NEVER OPENED-486 pages. DESCRIPTION: In its profiles of more than 160 of the country's ... most influential garden artists, this remarkable book combines horticulture, history, commerce, aesthetics and engineering. The profiles provide cogent analyses of the work that these men and women did for public gardens, cemeteries, botanic gardens and other sites. And there are memorable details at every turn--as when we learn that Stanley Abbott, who shaped the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway in the Appalachian Mountains, aspired to create what he called a "museum of managed American countryside." From Thomas Jefferson--a devoted horticulturist--to Florence Yoch, who designed many of the magnificent gardens for the elite of old Hollywood, these portraits in creativity make an irresistible, very American story. -WSJ, LeeAnn Lavin. Excerpts from a review from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette by Patricia Lowry on 9/30/00:

"Pioneers" will quickly become an indispensable resource for anyone working in the field. Attractively designed and packed with more than 450 plans and photographs (including 100 in color), it's also just fun to look at and read ...

For each entry, "Pioneers" also includes a brief bibliography. The book also can serve as a travel guide; at the end is a list of sites open to the public. ...

At least 14 of the pioneers have surviving gardens, landscapes or parks here — a reminder that this region has nationally significant landscapes that should be cherished and protected. ...

Editorial Reviews

Journal of the Society Architectural Historians
... The text is well illustrated with ample photographs, plans, and drawings, and most biographies are accompanied by a portrait. The alphabetical format of the biographical dictionary is logical and makes the book easy to use ...

Pioneers is itself an outgrowth of several pioneering efforts begun in the last decade to preserve and study designed landscapes. ...
...there is very little to be critical of in this fine book ... the editors ... and the small battalion of authors they have assembled have done an admirable job of balancing breadth with depth. Their book marks a new level of scholarship in a field that has long been a stepchild of architectural history. ... Pioneers of American Landscape Design will be for many years the authoritative source we will turn to for essential information on the men and women who molded so much of America's outdoor space.
Paula Panich
Pioneers of Landscape Design…will serve as a consciousness-raiser for what I hope will be thousands of American garden lovers, garden and park preservers, American history lovers-anyone who loves the land of this country and the efforts that have been made to create and preserve beautiful outdoor spaces…even the garden- and landscape-savvy may well learn something on almost every page…It is a chronicle of a collective American creative spirit as it relates to the landscape…also a chronicle of individual artists who struggled to live, and to make a living, expressing their artistic visions…I was moved by the sheer will and genius of many of these pioneers…

Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806)…Who can resist this story?…The story of Alfred Caldwell (1903-1998) should be read by anyone engaged in creative work…his quest for knowledge and freshness never ceased…Caldwell was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright; his subsequent work was championed by Mies van der Rohe…Equally compelling, and far less known, are the stories of the women-landscape architects, designers, and horticulturists-who made their marks in gardens and landscapes across the country…

Marjorie Sewell Caultley (1891-1954)…in 1924 her career took a "profound turn" as writer Neil Walker says, when she was hired by two wealthy philanthropists who supported the Garden City movement…Her contributions were to use native plants, and the orientation of houses and gardens to face an interior common area.

Covered here in rather short entries are about 160 figures that have shaped America's land, from George Washington (designer of Mt. Vernon) and Jefferson (Monticello), to James Rose who creates contemporary tree-through-the-roof creations. Featured in each entry is biographical information, a discussion of approach and methods, plans or photos (b&w and color) of major projects, and listings of sites where the designers' work may be seen. Lacks (sorely) an index and chronology, and could also do with a bit of thematic organization according to objects or sites designed (arches, fountains, cemetery, garden, pond, arboretum). One strength of the volume is that entries are followed by suggested readings on the architect. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
Barbara Seeber
A Young Turk is shaking up the staid landscape preservation movement with an accessible grassroots approach. ... His goal: to make millions of Americans as passionate about protecting their garden heritage as they have been about safeguarding significant architecture. "We're trying to make the landscape less invisible," Birnbaum explains. ... Recently Birnbaum edited a book, Pioneers of American Landscape Design. "Our task for the future," he says, "is to nurture the land and learn the stories it has to tell.—Garden Design Magazine
Landscape Architecture Magazine
Charles Birnbaum and Robin Karson have, with Pioneers of American Landscape Design, made an incalculable contribution to America's heritage, landscape architectural history, and the depth and diversity of the roots from which landscape architects draw their pride. …

Pioneers expands the definition of garden. By illuminating the diversity of skills, knowledge, and expertise of the visionaries, Birnbaum and Karson display unlikely sources of garden and landscape aesthetics. …

Most exciting, and beyond the growing sense of pride I have for my professional as I read about each designer's development, are the visual benchmarks. Numerous plans, landscape photos, sections, postcards, and more allow me to see the significant growth, and the designer's foresight, in landscapes that still exist. …

Pioneers is a natural reference for landscape history classes and designers who recognize the value of knowing the roots of their vocation or avocation. I hope its value is recognized in design studios and in other academic programs whose professional ancestors are recognized as contributing to American landscapes. …

The reader is asked to become involved in the continuing discovery of history and to feel free to seek further information. I hope readers respond and, through discussions with friends and neighbors, expand the wealth of the bits and pieces of history that make up this truly unique expression of professional pride.

Finally, an encyclopedia of landscape history's movers and shakers... Some 100 researchers and writers contributed for free. "They knew there was nothing else like it, Birnbaum says, "so they were willing to do anything to help us." A glimpse into such formidable archives as Wave Hill's and the Library of American Landscape History, the book is an illustrated who's who of our country's most significant landscape architects, conservationists, horticulturists, nurserymen, and theorists. In telling how they have influenced the shape of American landscape, it reveals a vital layer of our past.—Garden Design Magazine

It's the first of its kind in America. "We see it as a bible, the keystone for further research and reveleation," said Catha Grace Rambusch, director of the Catalog of Landscape Records in the United States ... Each succinct biography, often eloquently drawn, strives to capture the essence of its subject. ... The book is also a valuable tool for residents in towns and cities nationwide that had no easily available reference point for understanding their own landscapes. ... The book has united preservationists trying to drum up interest and money to save long-neglected parks whose designers were never recorded or had been long forgotten ... "Pioneers" can also be used as a kind of travelogue, thanks to the list at the back of the book "Sites Accessbile to the Public," complete with addresses and phone numbers.

...carries the reader out of the garden to touch on other subjects: history, biography ... Over the past 10 years, the preservation movement that is slowly documenting and preserving American designed landscapes has matured. One of the results is Pioneers of American Landscape Design, ... a handsome encyclopedia offering 160 short biographies of American landscape movers and shapers ... the book stretches the conventional idea of "landscape" past the residential garden to include designs for urban centers, freeways, cemeteries, suburban developments and wilderness preserves.
