In Pip and Posy’s fifth adventure, a day of playing in the snow gets downright frosty after the two friends differ on the snow animal they want to build; Pip (a rabbit) wants to create a snowrabbit, while Posy (a mouse) has other ideas. Scheffler’s chunky mixed-media paintings capture the intense emotions that often accompany young friendships, and he deftly uses humor to prevent the story from being overly didactic (“Posy was so mad at Pip that she threw the snow creature’s head at him. Oh, dear!”). Happily, this conflict is nothing that a few apologies and some modeling clay can’t fix. Ages 2–5. (Oct.)
Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Best friends Pip and Posy agree that they want to go outside and play in the snow. They get bundled up, and off they go. Catching snowflakes, making big snow footprints, making snow angels, and sledding are all fun shared activities. But when they start to make a snow-creature, disagreement arises. Posy wants to make a snowmouse; Pip wants to make a snowrabbit. Soon, the creature’s head is flung through the air in anger. A thoughtless push is given in return. The friends are again in agreement, but not in a good way. Rather, they both feel “very cold and very sad” at what they have done and what has been done to them. Posy is the first to make amends. Apologies exchanged and friendly hugs shared, the twosome leaves the snow behind. They head indoors, get out the clay, and settle into making both kinds of creatures they want--plus a whole lot more. Negotiating the rough spots of friendship takes skills that may be new to many picture book readers. Pip and Posy make mistakes but are ultimately good role models. This sweet and snowy story reminds us that such lessons are important all year round. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green AGERANGE: Ages 4 to 8.

PreS-Gr 1—Pip and Posy are bundled up and ready to play in the snow. They have a wonderful time sledding and making snow angels until they clash over whether to build a snowmouse or a snowrabbit. They get so angry that they throw snow and push until both are cold and sad. "Then Posy did a very kind thing." She apologizes to her friend, and he does the same. Then they go inside to play. The story and illustrations are packed with warmth, humor, and sympathetic understanding of the little dramas of young children's lives. Text is clear and black against boldly colored backgrounds, and the bright illustrations are filled with humorous details.—Amelia Jenkins, Juneau Public Library, AK

What could go wrong with a day in the snow? Pip, a male rabbit, and Posy, a female mouse, continue their generally joyful trek through toddlerhood in this simple story of friendship, difference and compromise. Lively and lovable illustrations rendered in ink, watercolor and colored pencil portray the charming pair as they dress for a winter adventure and traverse a nearby park, frolicking, sledding and making snow angels all the way. It's a fine day out in the snow--until they decide to make a snow creature. Posy wants to create a mouse, while Pip has decided on a rabbit. Anger is felt, snow is thrown, both get cold and soaked, and with no grown-ups around, it's up to the two to sort out their problems for themselves. Short, clear sentences infused with a childlike sensibility highlight their decisions and show the merits of generosity as well as how a compromise can be reached. While the text can at times be a trifle instructive, it is still inviting and accessible, and the illustrations provide a nice balance. The appealing faces of Pip and Posy, full of genuine emotion, are sure to welcome readers to this world, which is forgiving, warm and cozy despite the snow. Just the ticket for children who are developing social skills and learning what it is to be a friend. (Picture book. 2-5)
